RE: Peugeot 205 XS | Spotted
Discussion
My dad has a questionable car history but from the late 80's to the early 00's had company cars that he got to chose within a set budget. In 1991 i chose a 205 XS so ordered a graphite grey one new on a J reg. He loved that car and I dont think the 1.6i Vauxhall Tigra that replaced it was as enjoyable.
Fast forward a decade and a bit, my best mate bought an F reg silver 205 XS as his first car. I had a Mk4 XR3i at the time and despite being a bit more powerful there wasn't much in it.

Back when I was a yoof a mate had one of these in a light metallic blue. Surprisingly sprightly and very agile. Oh the days! At the same time another mate nicked his dad's 205 gti and along with another mate rolled it spectacularly barrel style into a field. Happily both still with us today.
A friend bought a super low mileage one last year (something like 11,000 miles iirc) which is obviously a minter and completely original. He’s really happy with it and has scratched that itch of nostalgia from his youth - the power of which should not be underestimated once you reach a certain age.
Here it is with my M5 at Retro Rides this year.
That’s his Rallye as well!

Oh come on...... this is all getting rather silly. as the bubble is well and truly swollen on the GTi and Rallye are we now dropping to the XS and making out it was some sort of legend amongst cars back then.... because it really wasn't. Give it 3 yrs and there will be an article up about the 205 1.0 Trio and how its bared back 44bhp engine is a delight rev out coupled with a snickety 4 speed box..........
This very 205 XS is just a dealer cashing in on nostalgia, it sold last year on collecting cars for £4200 last June which gives you a good guide to its open market value, nothings been done to it since and its being flipped 12 months later for twice the price.
Rare does not automatically mean good.

You can have fun driving an original fiat 500 or 1000cc mini…some people have just forgotten it in a world of weight and chunky tyres. This very 205 XS is just a dealer cashing in on nostalgia, it sold last year on collecting cars for £4200 last June which gives you a good guide to its open market value, nothings been done to it since and its being flipped 12 months later for twice the price.

I loved driving my MG Metro back in the day…why would I not enjoy it the same today?
If a dealer makes a profit then good for them, that is what dealers do. It is down to the buyer to decide if it is worth it, negotiate or walk away.

Nobody in this thread who has owned one has said it was legendary but we have all said they were a great car with just the right amount of everything. This very 205 XS is just a dealer cashing in on nostalgia, it sold last year on collecting cars for £4200 last June which gives you a good guide to its open market value, nothings been done to it since and its being flipped 12 months later for twice the price.

As for the value - that's subjective. I'd pay it - others wouldn't. I'm not wrong and neither are they.
Rare does not automatically mean good - you're right, but in this instance they are rare and they are good.
My old man had a Nova SR when I was a kid but he px'd it for a Corsa SRi when I was 16. So that put paid to my daydream of being given it as my first car.
When I eventually got round to getting my First car, post uni, the Nova SRs were thrashed and rusting away. My mate suggested a 205 xs instead.
They were all knackered as well. But I found a Roland Garros in lovely nick - essentially a camp xs. I loved it.

You’ve not had the pleasure of driving one back in the day, cracking fun little cars these were - this thread is more about how they were to drive than the silly price this one is being offered at.Rare does not automatically mean good.
Also worth noting above it’s only the alloy block Tu3S models that handled like this - loads of other 205’s had Tu engines but were iron blocks not alloy - that’s what made the XS and ax Gt special - light weight engine, low gearing and very revy!

Sure did, mate had one as a first car at school. Whilst we all had 1.1 fiesta mk2's he was lucky as his parents bought him a 5yr old silver one which if i remember correctly was stolen in canterbury. I also grew up living next door to the 205 Gti legend that was Steve Pilcher so 205's were all i really knew from age 8 to 16. I just don't remember the XS being anymore than any of the other cars my mates and i had growing up. It was never as fast as one mates Renault 5 TS with the 1.4 twin choke mod. Another friend had the 309 XSi which i know had the bigger engine and i liked that but then i have always liked a 309 more than a 205.Also worth noting above it’s only the alloy block Tu3S models that handled like this - loads of other 205’s had Tu engines but were iron blocks not alloy - that’s what made the XS and ax Gt special - light weight engine, low gearing and very revy!
anyway i digress, still stand by my first point the 205 XS was no more than an average car and that was back when the thing was just 5ys old.
Please don't think that i don't appreciate low weight low power as I daily a 1.6 Swift sport ( the last ever NA warm/hot hatch) so I'm firmly in the less is more camp
I quite like it but buy it for nine grand, then, once the nostalgia is over, advertise it and see how many takers there are.
It’s a four/five grand car with a big markup, not a nine grand car, you will take a bath if you buy it and then get rid.
Depends how much four grand or more matters, if you had the money you would just buy a GTI anyway I guess.

Does anyone know where the 1.4 xt sits in relation to this?
It was badged XT when first launched as the 3dr version of the GT 5dr (205 5drs were G, the later 3drs were X). Soon afterwards the XT was replaced with the XS, which I think just had the addition of the front spoiler from the GTI, otherwise mechanically identical.J4CKO said:

I know what you mean Jacko - had one as a courtesy car a couple of times when I had my 309 GTi. ‘‘Twas a lot less noisy than the S1 Rallye they loaned me once. It was a nice little car and if it’s in great nick I can see why someone who had one and loved it would pay close to the asking. In a world where people don’t quibble overly at million pound 50 year old 911s it’s a fun drivers hatch at a lower price point if you’re not millionaire. However, I think if I was to buy a 205 of this era I’d seek out a decent GTi for similar money if possibleIt’s a four/five grand car with a big markup, not a nine grand car, you will take a bath if you buy it and then get rid.

Often reviewed in comparison with its cousin, the AX GT
There were a few people looking for a nice one recently on here so it might be worth a look and a cheeky offer

Although not Top Trumps winners, the performance of both isn't too shabby for real world driving. They must be very light compared with our mid '00s Fiesta 1.4.Great fun on twisty, bumpy back roads.
I'd quite like something like this, but for shed money.

My first car was a red XS.
Loved it and it felt more fun than the GTi I replaced it with.
My second car was a G reg, one owner from new, full history, red XS. Compared to the MK3 Ford Escort 1.1 Popular it was replacing it felt absolutely amazing. Second day I owned it I was at the lights and an XR4i pulled alongside and we had a race off the lights. I don't think the driver of the XR4i was too happy to see me still alongside him at 60 MPH.Loved it and it felt more fun than the GTi I replaced it with.
I loved the noise of the twin choke as you put your foot down and that little engine just loved to rev it's nuts off.
I stupidly eventually replaced it with an F reg 205 1.6 GTi that I soon found out had clearly been absolutely thrashed. I hoped the Gti would be like the XS only more so, but it lost the feel of XS and didn't feel anywhere near as nimble or nice to drive.
Loved the XS, hated the GTi.

I though my 1.6 was the fastest thing on the road until a rover tomcat turbo blew me away…I bought one of those and it was rubbish.
