BX 4TC

The nose of the 4TC was much longer than the production versions due to the engine being mounted in line - all the regular cars had transverse engines

There are tons of special edition mk2 golfs even an electric one, called the citystromer with a whopping 50km range think there were 100 ish of them
VW made a Mk 1 CitySTROMer as well - 60km range and 25 built (not to be confused with the Elektro Golf which was a prototype only)

Elektro Golf

CitySTROMer

And a special edition of a special edition. Sunbeam Lotus "Avon" Edition - but not Avon as in tyres but Avon as in Avon Coachbuilders. 60 built with a special velour interior

Opel Kadett SuperBoss

SA version of the Astra GTE on steroids. 170BHP (228NM of torque!! which was a N/A per litre record until beaten by the 458) and LSD as standard. In 1990 there was nothing that could touch it. It would take a good decade for anything to come out with both the power and torque of this thing.

Interesting. I always felt the 155hp quoted output of the redtop was rather conservative, they always seems to go rather better than advertised. Was it essentially the same engine?

I did drive an Astra with a rally car sourced LSD and it did transform the car, the basic car was very much the starting point for a great rally/race car rather than the finished article in my view, alterations to the suspension and transmission could make a huge difference.

A particularly weird beast. Turbo charged version of the Simca Type 180 (an outdated 1970's engine) with a SM gearbox that was originally used in the DS. No Centre diff and to help with weight the radiator and oil cooler were in the back.

Can see just how much engine bay the boat anchor takes up.

Not really a surprise it was a failure. Although I have somewhat of a hankering after one (although not enough to consider buying one) as it's a car I think would be an ideal contender for a restomod and nose job! rofl

I stand corrected, never knew the Mk1 version existed

I presume they never made a convertible?

It's a pretty interesting demonstration of why transverse engines aid packaging - I know there are other cars that came in transverse/longitudinal variants but clearly the BX transverse bay wasn't sufficiently long for a longitudinal engine as was.

Ultra rare VW Golf "Swallow Tail"

From launch, the line on the rear panel pressing on the Mk 1 dipped from the tail light to the bottom of the number plate. Just a year later, this was changed to a straight line for the rest of production. Show one of these so called early Swallow Tail cars to a Golf geek and they'll be reaching for the tissues.

Along the same lines and at about the same time iirc there was also the Chevette HS with the 2.3 engine.
