They are a fun car, they do pretty good mpg, I'm up 38mpg without trying, they have great visibility, good driving position (I'm 6ft) and my two seater has a huge boot for stuff!

Endless dress up stuff if you like to tinker and it gets positive comments from people wherever I go.

Its not hard to live with, it's just not refined as much as other cars. it's streets ahead of my first car back in 1991, a mk1 fiesta 950cc, and I drove that for years and didn't consider it basic at the time because I hadn't had my expectations raised by what we now take for granted.

I smile when I use it which is why I bought it. It sparks joy.
Agree with all of that, if Marie Kondo had a garage she wouldn't chuck the Jimny out. It terms of tinkerability it's more like a classic car than a modern one. Jealous of your mpg, I debated getting the manual over the auto but the traffic where I live is nightmarish most of the time so I prioritised left leg comfort.

I have nothing against Toyota at all, as said previously. But it depends what kind of off roading you want to do and where. I have off roaded lots of Discos and RR's (have a lifted p38 on Mud Terrains now). But tbh they are too big for many of the locations I might want to go.
I still don’t know if I’d spend £22k on one either, not saying £22k isn’t reasonable for one especially if new/ nearly new though.

If you’ve found a P38 too big for some places, you’d definitely find an 80 Series massive!, I took my last L322 off road a couple of times and the 80 is definitely longer, not 100% sure on wider but very close.
They’re incredibly capable off road but it does depend on how much you value your bodywork!, still can’t wait to get mine out in the mud but need to do a couple of things first, including a new exhaust, suitable tyres and probably a snorkel and diff/gearbox breathers, not going to bother lifting it at the moment as it’s got pretty decent ground clearance as is and I don’t want to compromise it too much on road.

When it comes to more modern versions I would say the Landcruisers do have the LR/RRs beaten on reliability and robustness but to give LR their due their older stuff isn’t unreliable and it’s robust too, the 200/300 TDI is a great engine, it’s the stuff from the 00s onwards where it went horribly wrong (the P38 wasn’t great but a lot of those bugs can be easily ironed out of them).

I appreciate the newer stuff but I can’t see me buying any of them, the D4 is probably my favourite of all of LRs later stuff, if they were built like a Landcruiser I’d have one in a heartbeat!.
