More cars belching black smoke than ever?
Discussion
There's a car that matches a stereotype given in the thread previously that drives along my road.
I can taste the diesel when it's driven past. I don't know if there's some oil in the exhaust fumes as it seems to taste more burny than normal diesel fumes. It has a 'personal' plate on it. It may be a 3D gel plate.
I assume it's had the dpf removed.

Most of the smokeclouds around here are from old remapped BMW diesels, Volvo V50 for some reason, and Golfs, obviously.
It's a thing though - some of these cloud busters are quite fast.
Yup my E90 325D LCI went from 204bhp to about 325bhp after a remap and the DPF being removed and it did kick some some out when you floored it. However around town it wasn't bad at all. It's a thing though - some of these cloud busters are quite fast.
I think on some of the VAG cars if you run big power the smoke is hard to avoid and a lot of them end up de-catted as well...

P1 platform cars like the v50, c30 and s40 of that generation in some cases depending on diesel did not have a dpf some did not my c30 did not and did smoke slightly It's a thing though - some of these cloud busters are quite fast.
Wife's eco tech 1.0t petrol 3 pot engine from 2016 chucks out black clouds if you boot it just after starting when it's cold. Dealer (vauxhall) said it's normal.. something to do with clearing the cats and getting them up to temp. Was shocked when I saw it, seems a big step backward.
Edit black clouds may be a *little* exaggeration but you can definitely see it.

Quite a few in a certain brand and model I used to own removed the DPF and have it tuned. For some reason they thought it looked and sounded great. I personally thought it looked and sounded horrendous.
Spotted an E46 diesel of some description in my neighborhood over the weekend. The thing sounded like a truck. Very odd.Ninja59 said:

The mk1 fabia doesn’t have a DPF so will kick out smoke regardless of maintenance/mods. Don’t imagine tuning it and removing EGR/etc will help much, but they’re quite smoky anyway.
That's not true, a Fabia would still have to pass a smoke test. The issue was all too often cheap genetic remaps that are available on such cars. With diesel tunes it's very easy to get more power just by over fueling and getting loads of exhaust soot.
I'm not sure it's the DPFs being removed that's causing it. Mine's old enough that it doesn't have one fitted, has almost reached 250k and doesn't really smoke. Sometimes there is some under heavy acceleration but otherwise it's pretty clean and is well under the limits on its MOT too.
Even my little boat with its 1970's clattery old diesel doesn't smoke much except on starting and on heavy load (a good sign it's just wasting fuel for no extra speed so it's worth throttling back!)
Any car that's belching out black smoke surely has something wrong with it...

Drove to Calais yesterday
About 5 miles out the smoke was bad we thought a wild fire but as we got closer to the smoke it was coming for an Audi A4 we sadly had to follow in to the Euro Tunnel just on idle smoke coming from it I assumed a blown turbo but maybe remapped ??
At passport desk we saw him be taken in to the customs shed thing. No clue if he was let out but we could see clearly again thankfully

Remapped VAG stuff in poor condition especially bad for this.
It's a scene thing dude!You wouldn't understand, grandad.
In reality across the automotive world there are many areas of specialist interest which others just don't appreciate to the same degree as someone into a particular scene. I'd argue that the majority of enthusiasts across the spectrum see something out of the ordinary and have the view that it's 'not my thing but whatever floats your particular boat then on you go and good luck.'
When that particular 'scene' results in a situation where something becomes dangerous, anti social or just plain illegal then those vehicles should IMHO not be on the road.
