Imho ugly does not always equal tasteless. A tasteless car is, in all probability, also ugly but plenty of cars aren’t tasteless. Tasteless implies (again, imho) ridiculous colour schemes, weird gold-plated sections, pointless wings, slats, gaps, massive wheels which reduce the drivability and insanely excessive, bizarrely-coloured interiors.

The gt3 rs is ugly, yes but it’s also purposeful. A Cullinan painted bright turquoise with mint interior and gold-plated brightwork and 28 inch rims would be both ugly and tasteless.

Followed a G-wagon recently and it got me thinking this might be one of the most tasteless cars on sale.

Anyone have any views on this, or candidates for the title.
Yes, the G-Wagon is superb and has stayed honest to its roots styling wise and ability wise. Not everyone who buys them will have good taste, but a great many will. Must be about the complete opposite of tasteless.

The X6 wins it for me, just look at the absolute state of it.

It might be slightly less ugly than the iX (in the way some bits of the Titanic are slightly less underwater than others) but it's more vulgar. All the grace of a pregnant hippo and the side profile of a dog taking a dump.
Yeah any coupe SUV is pretty tasteless… ‘sporty’ ones even more so.
Why? The X6 looks pretty good to me, well proportioned.

If only someone had already thought of that….
the other one was simply in a drab olive green or metalic blue

takes a special kid of chav to go with a porsche riveria blue and matching leather on such an ugly car.

its the winner, close the tread.

Don't think these are for sale still, but would certainly count as one of the most tasteless cars on sale ever!

Don't get me wrong, it is pretty epic in its own rights. But it is rubbish on road, rubbish off road (I think they even came with a warning from MB not to use them off road). They are rubbish for doing anything you'd use a car/vehicle for. Difficult to get in and out of. Doesn't fit in any parking space or drive-thru.

There is one single reason to buy or own one. And that is to be vulgar and pose in it, flashing how fat your wallet is. Which has to be pretty much definition of having no taste.

it may look good to you, different designs appeal to different people as looks are completely subjective, its why we have such amazing variety. I'd described the X6 as many things, not necessarily derogatory either, but we'll proportioned it is not, personally I'd say it's the opposite.

I'm delighted that exists, but then I love Hummer H1 etc also. I'd happily have one in my lottery garage.

Both amazing cars in their own right, but neither are remotely classy

Not sure how it isn't well proportioned? Even the grill works on a taller and doesn't look out of place. Plus it is quite evident that there is a general dislike of any saloon or coupe shaped SUV's on PH in general. Regardless of how they look. I think people worry more about perceived (ill-perceived) image than what a vehicle actually physically looks like.

I'm not remotely saying the X6 looks like this, but is comes from a similar mould of sleek'ish body shape and some sort of off road stance.

The original X6 always reminded me of an oversized RC car....

A set of AT tyres on one would have suited IMO.

Not sure I'd put the Hummer H1 in the same category as the 6x6 G.

The H1 looked almost identical to the HMMWV just with shiny paint and a nicer interior. And it still did everything it said on the tin. The 6x6 is just excessive willy waving and no use for anything at all. And this is some one who really likes the G-Wagon.

Every time I see these I think Mercedes are maybe playing the heritage card a bit close to the line…

Overfinch...

Range rover but worse.
Overfinch used to quite understated. A badge or two and a well engineered yank V8 swap.
yes

I remember recently being pleased to discover they were still going, and then subsequently rather disappointed to discover they've essentially become purveyors of bling wheels, and bolt on crap a la Kahn.

This sort of thing is what they used to be really good at.

The general dislike is often backed up with an opinion that they are poorly proportioned. They packaging is often quite often the worst of, rather that the best of the both worlds. I've not actually mentioned the looks as such, something can have strange proportions and be seen as beautiful, equally the opposite can be said. Class and looks are purely subjective and we all feel different about them and very few will ever completely agree. Whereas, proportion requires a bit more science, the thing being considered needs to look correct or appropriate in relation to its size, shape, or position of other things. With regards the X6, it may be in proportion to other coupe crossover/SUV type vehicles, but as a car its an unbalanced mix of other vehicles that can make look a little ungainly or awkward as the proportions don't look right compared to say a traditional saloon, coupe or SUV. In time, with the increase of their popularity, this opinion may change. But right now it just looks to have unusual proportions. This is not to say that it may actually be a good car, or attractive to some people. On the subject of taste, it may well not be the most tasteless but it's certainly not a classy car.

I just like the way it looks man, and apologies for using the wrong name, the military hummer is the one I really like, but I do like the H1 and even H2! I have never bought something for 'willy waving' purposes, yet my 'lottery' garage would have some behemoths like this in it because, I like them, which is my one rule for buying a car. Don't care what others think, drive what you like. I akways feel people who judge others on what they drive, tattoos, their dog, whatever, tells me much more about them than those they are judging. Would be a boring world if we were all the same!

Oh my, I'm certainly not setting myself up as an arbiter of taste, but if I was I'm not helping myself. Love three door Evoque and convertible, love the 6 wheel, and other g-wagens, and I love the original X6.

I like them all too, in there own weird ways, none are classy or tasteful though. I love my current family car to bits and its truly anonymous and invisible, my previous car was a bright yellow Alfa Romeo. I feel I understand class and taste, doesn't have to mean i want to participate in either though wink

beer I am sometimes reminded of Coco Chanel's famous quote when I see some designs, it was something like 'fashion goes out of style, but style is never out of fashion'

Unfortunately the second Land Rover stuck a Supercharged V8 under the bonnet of a Range Rover Overfinch’s USP was gone.
