I saw one of those out the wild the other day and discovered that the awful grill, isn’t even actually a grill, purely there for ‘styling’.BS62 said:

No it isn't, it's a sensor panel with some pretty cool features. Slate it for being ugly to your eyes, but don't talk bks. If they didn’t want it to look like a grill they’d have the sensor behind the bumper or something.
Don’t say something is hillocks just because you like a car most people cannot stand.

But you said the grille isn't even a grille and is just there for styling, and that my friend, IS bks.
Edit to add: it isn't a grill so why style it like one? BMW call it a grille, so it's a grille. Just because it hasn't got holes in it doesn't mean it's not a grille.
For their sins (or someone's sense of humour) they've come up with this new nose for their cars, and they've hidden a load of tech inside it. Personally I think it's a better look than the bland slab of bumper you get at the front of a Tesla, which is where you proposed hiding the sensors.

If that's not for you then VAG will no doubt have something up your street.
And do you really think they were going to give up having some form of kidney grille, the single most identifiable feature of a BMW?

If it’s a ‘sensor panel’ it’s not a grille then is it?
If a manufacturer decides to glue an object in a trademarked shape on the front of a bigger object, then the first object is whatever the hell they decide to call it. I think that was the other poster’s point, that you then took issue with

Agree though that no way will they will bmw ever ditch the kidney shape, but on an electric car I can only think that there could be cleverer ways to use it than a sensor panel made to look like massive plastic grille.
BMW styling is so bad at the moment. There's a iX driving nearby and it really is far worse in the flesh than on photos.
Honorable mention for the new Tesla SUV thing too, I don't know what it's called, but man it's a lump of junk.
Why does the Tesla design dept think that creating a smoothed off soap bar of hideousness from aprox 1980 is acceptable? Is it an Elon Musk EV joke? How much design blandness can we get away with?
I've seen a few iXs too and I think they look better in person than in pictures.
I remember when the Chris Bangle five series was released to a similar reaction. Looking back I really like the design now (not so much at the time).
The iX is just another step in the direction set by the i3 and i8. I'm not much of a BMW fan, but personally like the fact they push design forward unlike the VAGs group slight revisions on each generation.
Either way its hardly tasteless.

This is how you incorporate a historical identifiable feature (or even "grille") with style. If that's not for you then VAG will no doubt have something up your street.

Agree it looks better in in the flesh. The perm-offended blokes the can't stand this car are going to find themselves in an ever decreasing circle as the world moves on.I remember when the Chris Bangle five series was released to a similar reaction. Bad design is bad design. The iX is bad design. Travel to a modern Chinese or American city and all of a sudden it looks completely in-place.
This is what never seems to get through to posters on here, we are no longer relevant to the global new car market.
We are outnumbered 10 to 1.
Designing a new car to appeal to the majority of new car buyers globally is not bad design, it's just business 101.
