My secret is that I’m a very law-abiding person and the rise of pervasive automated enforcement and surveillance by camera for speeding, parking and a number of other things really ramps up my anxiety levels. I’m worried about accidentally getting tickets and points even though I’ve been driving since the early 1990s and my first and last speeding ticket was in 1995.
May I cordially recommend a continental road trip?

Any law enforcement has to be face to face, otherwise the local cops are just left with a nice souvenir photograph of your holiday biggrin

I prefer tall tyres, like the ones we see on the 1960’s & 1970’s classics in Harry’s Garage.
So much better than the low profile harsh riding rubber bands inappropriately fitted to almost everything these days.

I always let pretty females out at junctions by fingering* them.

  • hand at 12 o’clock on the steering wheel and raise the index finger as if giving out in cricket.

I’m also now in the don’t-fret-the-small-stuff camp. It’s so liberating.

Quite a few.

On balance, my wife is a probably a better driver than I am, but I'm better at parking.

I have no issue with people driving below the speed limit.

I have broadly lost interest in cars and driving. My wife does 90% of the driving now, and that suits me fine. A friend who owns a garage recently got a Lotus Carlton in, and invited me over for a drive, as he knew I loved them back in the 90s. But he's 20 miles away so I couldn't be bothered.

That's such a shame. frown

If it helps I'd always be available as a stand-in for a ride in an LC - even if it was 200 miles away!

Haha, if I didn't know that you already knew of my upcoming continental road trip in memory of my mother, I'd point you to the thread I made about it.

Oh what the hell - it might invite more ideas...

I like to drive my 911 at 65-70 on the motorway, confuses the hell out of a lot of have a go ST owners and Audi drivers.

Even unmarked plod seem confused by it, many times they have passed me and had a good nose into the car to see if I’m on the phone, reading a book, who knows.

Yes I can go through 100mph very quickly and safely in the right situations, but why bother. Plus I often have doggo in the car and he doesn’t like being in the car much.

I don't like cars with loads of power.

The 400bhp Golf R I briefly owned felt far too fast for the road, and you couldn't enjoy going through two gears without being at license losing speed on most roads.

My cars in the 200-300bhp feel perfect for the road to have some fun and blast though the rev range without going silly speeds.

Depends on the cars weight of course!

Sometimes I find myself driving with my 'pinky' out. As you would when drinking afternoon tea from a cup and saucer.

I'd much rather have a 11-1200kg fwd Golf with 230bhp and narrower tyres than a current Golf R. It would be miles more fun (for the type of driving i do)

I have more fun driving base model cars than their higher performance counterparts.

Modest power, and narrow & tall sidewall tyres are great fun.

Said exactly the same earlier. Had some of my most entertaining drives in relatively prosaic cars.

I hate Porsche sports cars but love their family cars. Their cars in general are very clinical, this works well for daily use but not as much fun for a weekend blast.

Every time I see "Gaydio" on a DAB station list I can't help but admire the wordplay.

I can't listen to Ace of Spades AND drive sedately, to the point that I have to change tracks/station if I'm not somewhere that lends itself to driving appropriately for AoS. Mrs D enables this behaviour too.

Me too. Any model with low profile tyres is immediately discounted when I am car hunting.

I have actually driven cars at work with lower profile tyres than I have on my car and was suprised how OK the comfort level was but all else equal bigger air pockets give better cushioning.

On genuinely sporty models which are going to be driver enthusiastically they are of course correct. Most of the cars on our local school run and supermarket carpark seem to be on rubber bands these days though.

Especially if they're owned by a rental company wink

Too much power is not enjoyable. Well, it is ... but it's difficult to use on the public roads. That and I've been converted from manual to automatic (with paddles!) smile
