It would be interesting to know how many of the posters who are complaining about the weight and the four pot would even notice if they drove it and hadn't been told? Would the performance, the 'piped' music and the occasion 'fool' them?

I would like to think most posters would be able to tell the difference in sound between a boosted 4 pot and a V8.

You've never ridden a motorbike then?

Or attended a rally (forest or tarmac - either is good)?

Watched a swarm of Caterhams, Arials, Ginettas or Radicals tear around on a track day?

You need a bit more educating my friend, so as to learn and appreciate all the joys an ICE has the potential to deliver, regardless of its configuration. 200bhp V-Twin anyone? wink
Fair enough in hindsight I shot from the hip a bit with that statement and could have chosen my words more carefully!

I agree there were a lot of production cars pre 2000 with excellent sounding 4’s as well as a lot of current track biased cars and bikes etc

But as for current production cars most 4 cylinders need fake noises or pops and bangs to sound interesting. Doubt anyone has bought a 2.0 jag f type over a V6 or V8 because they prefer the noise for example!

Suppose I am biased having fitted a rocketeer V6 into my 1990 MX5!
Hey UM, it was me who made the statement they liked the sound of an angry four pot, and I must admit I was surprised at your response. For the record, I much prefer the noise of a five, six, eight cylinder engine, at no point did I say I preferred a four pot, but as you have now pointed out, some of them sound particularly good!! beer

It's a sad day when it's a toss up as to whether you get more enjoyment out of your hoover than your car.

Funny you mention the Datsun GTR, this Merc falls into the same category: "Should love this but...meh."
its funny you call it a Datsun GTR. gives a real insight to the type of person you are.

since when is a 680bhp c class car 'meh'.
I let that bit slide, it's the same as educated people who say footballist or golf bats and attempt to be cool by professing not to know anything about sports. Copying Clarkson is what the condition is called smile
Charming. Express an opinion about a car, get character assassinated for the use of a single word.
Frankly, that says more about the two of you - and more accurately than your judgement of me, I'd wager.

On topic, borat52 said that the GTR is only soulless to those who haven't driven one and I'll be first to put my hand up and say that's probably right. I'm not alone in thinking everything about the GTR should appeal and it just never has, but then I've never driven one and know from experience that a single drive can change your mind. Perhaps it's that's the case with this C63 too. I hope so.

Could the electronically augmented sound of a small capacity four highly turbocharged four pass for an AMG V8? I suspect not, but perhaps.

I definitely think that it could. I remember the F13 640d that I had sounded like a petrol V8 from the inside(genuinely). They can programme whatever noise that they want you to hear now.

I wonder if that will happen in EVs eventually inside(not sure if they do that already though?).

From within with the piped v8 rumble? I believe some of these gizmos are very realistic

Hey man, you misread me, I mentioned the sports misquoting, although the Datsun thing does irk me but i generally let it slide these days. I am interested to know, why did you call it a Datsun though? Its not jist you, many non fans do and I wonder what is the thought process behind it?

As I said in the other thread full power is only available when the battery is fully charged and that won't be as often as the owners want it to be.

Likely to see a lot available on the second hand market when the initial hype drops off and reality sets in.
Are you aware that the recouperation of energy via the brake pedal can be rather powerful, and capable of recovering up to 150kw? You're getting confused I feel with a regular plug in hybrid where range is the priority, and in this case, the car's setup has been tuned for performance, not range of the small battery.

Without wishing to derail the thread: because I'm old enough and well travelled enough to remember seeing the same cars badged both Datsun and Nissan, and have been playfully swapping the names around since long, long before a certain farmer made his fortune shouting about speed and power.

Re: "non-fans", for me it's purely the GTR. Have always been a fan of fairladys, Z-cars from 240 to 370, and skylines up to R34...but the GTR just has something about it that I don't like and have never been able to put my finger on it. Objectively it makes no sense because in all other regards the car is phenomenal.

And that is the point I was making re: the new C63. The bhp figure and angry grille alone should make me fizz, but...it doesn't.
Said by someone who quite likes the Purosangue but not the Urus. There's no real logic behind different tastes.

Seems to be a lot of love for a "1500kg" Carbon Fibre Renault 5 Turbo on the home page.

You'd notice the weight the first corner you approached at 70mph

Yeah but not mimic engine noise, something else, borderline Tie Fighter in some cases.

Anyone know what the newer MCT boxes are like in the real world?

I used to own a C63 507 with the 7 speed MCT and it was decent enough but not a patch on a PDK of the same era for example.

I'm sure the game has moved on an awful lot since then, but are they sticking with the MCT purely because of the torque numbers which their DCT can't handle? Or is this just the the better option?

Crazy figures for a 2 litre car. So yeah 240 horses per litre. My old TVR Chim only managed 240 horses using all 4 litres. Defo sounded better than this will though

For (I would imagine) about the same money, I shall stick with my E63 estate which makes all the right noises and Model 3 Performance which can do electricity driving properly (silly performance + electric range). Job jobbed.
