I've nothing against the F-Pace SVR (that engine is welcome in anything!), but am disappointed at Jaguar for not replacing the XF RS Sportwagon when the new shape XF was released.

They would say it's because there's more demand for the F-Pace with an oversized engine than the more traditional XF, which is probably true, so I'm always a little bit saddened to see a high powered SUV as I know it's one more confirmation that the cars I personally like (saloons, coupes, and estates) are not worth developing.

But drive past me and the V8 woofle will still make me smile.

I prefer a fast estate to an SUV, but you do you.

My only concern is the sheer size of these things and the fact the majority seem to be driven by people who are scared of getting within two feet of the kerb so they sit aloft in their giant boxes careering along a foot over the centre line so you end of having to take evasive action!
The majority of them? Given how EVERY school run in dominated by them, apparently, I'm surprised there are any left, surely every time the pass each other, the majority would get taken out by each other?

I'm only 3 days into SUV driving, but from 20yrs of driving, it's more the tiny hatchbacks driven by old ladies and pimped up hot hatches whose drivers are busy updating their BeReal photos on their phones that are more likely to lane drift.

All down to opinion isn't it

I like fairly light weight cars (as in, 1200KG ish, not specifically a 900kg Lotus) so I like hot hatches, sure there are many people that think that as I'm a 33 year old IT professional on a decent salary that I'm a bell end for driving around in a teenagers car (a fiesta) but I hate SUVs due to size, weight and dynamics. I've driven many over the years and hate them all. I think they are unnecessarily large, although people with kids always tell me they need the space and I wouldn't believe how much room just 1 child requires yet I've seen people manage in a Ford KA.

I'm fortunate my wife has the larger car (a CX5) so I can continue being a childish tosser in my fiesta

Always interested to hear people's opinions, but don't care enough to change. Still remember my mum turning her nose up at a guy driving an Impreza STI at school once, I'm that guy now. The tosser that would drive around in a non sensible car in a non sensible colour with a non sensible ironing board rear wing.

I tend not to let SUVs out of junctions as I can't see past them.

I got myself a mini-SUV (BMW X1 xdrive) a few months ago and its brilliant, far better at literally everything than the Golf that went before it!
My wife bought one last August and it's been excellent up to now.

We use it for family duties and it takes more luggage than you think.
Space under the boot floor is a big bonus.

Could do with a bit more power but that's a minor thing.

I don't dislike SUV's as a rule but I do find most of them so generic and bland I can't tell one from the other. I also dislike the term SUV being used for what is a jacked FWD hatch back. There is nothing sport, or utility about them. If it has off road ability, 4WD than all is well.

Debadge a modern dark grey/black SUV and it could be anything, ( apart from the awful, in your face BMW). Hence why I love my P38.

Isofix child seat bases are immense space hogs, even worse when the seat is rear facing. With one behind the driver's seat I couldn't get comfy in an F31 BMW 335d Touring, but had no such problems in a G01 X3 M40i. Better handling makes no difference if you're not comfy driving the thing.
As far as the Ka goes, isofix wasn't standard until 2013 and people might have managed with smaller, seatbelt-secured seats but they weren't as safe as an isofix monstrosity.

The unnecessarily large thing always grates as well...I've never heard that said about a transit, and not only are the fking things everywhere, they're an utter eyesore yet nationally beloved.
We should get rid of all full size vans because I've seen people manage with an astra panel van, and anyway they handle better.

Well said. Just ‘managing’ in any area of life isn’t an especially inspiring way to live is it. If you carried the KA argument through it’s rather silly. Speaking as a long time KA owner, now with an SUV and small human to take in it. Besides you have no idea what other things people use their SUV for or how. And for the record I find mine the easiest thing to drive and park in greater London. Country lanes are more of a challenge.

How about VW campers? They tow their entire house round all year (fridge, oven, hob, gas, water, beds etc) just so they can go camping twice a year. I'd imagine they're far worse for the environment than any SUV or van, however, I'd imagine a few Tyre Extinguishers might actually own them.

OP,

I promise you people have far more important things to worry about in life than someone else’s vehicle choice no matter what it might be.

You may encounter the odd plonker but that doesn’t default to jealousy.

Enjoy your car.

I find them good from a utility point of view for sport purposes. They can carry 2 large MTBs standing with the the front wheels off and lock in position with the dropper, which is one of the key reasons to have them for me. I can't do that with an estate, way too shallow.

The longer wheel travel and clearance allows me to park in places where an estate won't go, Surrey Hills I am looking at you. Obviously the limit quickly becomes traction on road tyres but still. It is not some sort of extreme off road capability just that little extra that makes a significant difference even with 2wd.

The word Sport is not referring to how they drive.

I dont have any axe to grind with SUV's, but for me I would not relish berthing some of the larger ones.

Had to nip to have some stitches removed from my shoulder yesterday, appointment was at a place in Macclesfield and the car park was pretty full, found a space and parked, it was pretty tight but as was in a Fiesta it fitted ok, in say an X5 or whatever not sure where I would have gone ?

I had a first generation Mercedes CLS which is a similar footprint (Doesnt seem that big nowadays) and part of the reasons for moving that on was parking it, not that it was that hard, and an SUV is easier being higher up, just that a lot of spaces were simply too small for it.

Is it a non problem for SUV owners or does it cause some agro ? It always looks a big fraught at our local Sainsburys as it is awash with them and sometimes it sort of renders the spaces either side a bit narrow, if I only need a few things I go on an old Mountain bike with panniers on, get to park closer than the disabled slots, P and C spaces and even the EV bays, and its free.

Have you hustled a Transit down a twisty country lane recently? The damn things are one of the best handling vehicles out there, which is intensely annoying!

(Note - an empty one, obviously. Tools/plumbing supplies/ladders/car spares etc. tend to affect the weight distribution...)

I have, regularly. They are not one of the best handling vehicles out there, not even close. One of the best vans, maybe

I really miss my MINI when it comes to parking because I didn't need to worry about parking. Whereas parking is pretty much the only time where I get a bit annoyed about the size of an SUV to be honest.

An SUV always seems that little bit too big for the parking spaces to me.

Sat here waiting for my new car to be delivered (F-Pace SVR). Or rather, initially waiting for the delivery driver to call to say he is an hour away.

I'm like a kid at Christmas, pretending to work, but actually looking at reviews and comments on this and other sites/forums.

This is the first SUV/4x4 I’ve owned, but not the first I’ve driven. I’m a big fan of the driving position and the drive of an SUV as much as the extra benefit the greater loadspace begets, but on this and other forums, the anti-SUV sentiment is prominent, especially to those who can’t demonstrate a specific and unequivocal need for such a car. Despite the car’s 5l supercharged V8, 542bhp and British credentials, am I set for a barrage of hatred and criticism?
No.

I have a compact SUV (RS Q3). Usual comments are “why didn’t you get a proper sports car with the same engine like the Audi TT RS?”. My reply is I like slightly higher stance and compact footprint. And that I have two sports cars with the right driven wheels - not a coupe-shaped Golf. I also drive a Jazz occasionally as it’s so easy to park. Not a fan of large SUVs though and I think they are a bit anti-social.
