RE: Volkswagen Golf GTI Pirelli | Spotted

If you want getting on for 8 grand for an old Golf, maybe remove the gash modifications ?
Car is probably alright, I do buy on history and condition rather than some perception of the previous owners background, as realistically old cars may well have been owned by a "poor person" who may have also been young and had dubious taste, they wont all be affable like minded middle aged petrolheads fond of brogues and red trousers when you fish at that end of the market.
Though its not really at that end of the market at 8 grand for an old, not really that special Golf GTI, on the face of it, it has survived quite well but they need to remove the crappy wind defectors, "4D" plates etc as it does scream inner city woolly hat wearing geezer and clouds of berry vape (or worse/better depending on your opinion) emanating.
Now some may love that st stuck to it, but they wont buy an 8 grand old Golf, they will be trawling FB marketplace, 8 grand puts it bang into enthusiasts territory and that market dont want any evidence that points to its previous use, they want it to look as near to when it came out of a shiny VW showroom some years earlier, they want clean, original, stacks of bills and will check it thoroughly, but they wont come when it looks like that.
It wouldnt bother me if I wanted one, main things are its mechanical health and is it riddled with rot, but wouldn't be looking at that, at 8 grand as would expect it to have been done.
The stuck on stuff is the work of a moment, the plates are £25 or so to replace, £100 for some original springs and a couple of hours, just need to think how many lovely, original MK1 and 2 Golf GTIs out there that had, back in the day eyebrow spoilers, 17 inch TSW Venoms, massive stereo and whatever ?
All pretty much forgotten instantly once reverted, but, shouldn't need to at that money.

I've seen several of these at classic car auctions the last few years, most of them JDM cars imported. But here's a UK model (in yellow) with 49k miles that sold for under £10k at CCA 12 months ago:

I'm pretty sure the UK cars were black and silver unless it was a special order of somesort. It may have had the rear bumper changed to accommodate the UK plate. I know some markets got them in yellow but not the UK.https://www.classiccarauctions.co.uk/2008-volkswag...
For all I know the last owner was a polite, mild-mannered person who religiously followed proper maintenance schedules, always waited until the car was warm before driving it hard and would be offended at the very idea of anyone smoking anything at all in their pride and joy, let alone anything illegal.
But even still, 8 grand for an old Golf with almost 100k on the clock feels steep given the other options out there.

Far too many red flags on this particular specimen: lowered, debadged, wheels need a refurb, looks like rust starting on rear wheelarch (fronts probably not far behind), seats laid back gangster-style as well as wrong tyres. Is this the best (only) one they could find?
Saw a guy in a Jetta yesterday, so reclined you could barely see his head over the steering wheel !Edited by simonwedge on Wednesday 15th March 07:08
Some of the comments on here are amusing.
Questioning a previous owner's modifications against the decisions made by VAG engineers when designing the car stands out, yet everyone boasts how they've changed this and that on their car to improve it.
Discounting the nicest, lowest-mileage car in the world because it has 3D / gel number plates? Really?
Goodyear tyres on a car badged "Pirelli": hate to break it to PH, but there's a lot of folk - even those that own this sort of car - that just need "tyres" and don't really care / can't afford to be choosy over the brand. Were old Pirellis that bad? (Genuine question - I have no experience of them).
Some of the residents of Leeds / Bradford may strike you off their Christmas card lists.
For me, this an OK-looking old Golf, but it lacks visual drama. Special editions should look different to the regular models, which outwardly (wheels apart) this doesn't, at least not enough.

P6000’s, anyone remember them? The ditchfinder of the early 2000’s.
Oh boy I had a set on my 200SX, I'm lucky I'm still here, they were nothing short of dangerous. Why are people getting so highly strung over the modifications? It's all modest, easily changed stuff, hardly the end of the world to revert it back to stock.

Yeah, had a closer look, rust coming on one rear and one front wheelarch. Not the end of the world but it needs what, prob £1500/2000 of bodywork to sort that out professionally ?
New front wing plus fitting, sort the cab out on the rear arch and probably paint the whole of that side ?
Appreciate its not a new car but at 8 grand, you wouldn't expect rust, if it were 4 grand maybe.

The lowering looks awful. Says something about the previous owner who clearly thought they could improve on the chassis design engineers at VAG.
To be fair plenty of their products could be easily improved upon from factory spec although I'll give you the MK5 Golf was one of their better efforts. The tyres will have improved this example for sure. If it's on decent coilovers who knows............... Rest of it looks dodge though.Great cars (prefer the ED30 though) and mk5s are rising in price - Pirellis have been this kinda money for years now but this one looks rough as - I love modifying cars but always prefer to buy standard and start from scratch so I know I'm doing things right. This one with knackered wheels, obvious rust on a rear arch and one front, the Ramair kit, lowered on god knows what coilovers, cheapo Chinese head unit etc would be one to steer well away from if I was looking. Has xenons though which is a must but then only has the midline MFD instead of highline.
