Well their worldwide sales figures have been good, aside from a slump in 2020 which is to be expected. They sold more cars worldwide than Mercedes, and also Audi. So I guess they aren't too much of a joke I guess.
This is just it. By any traditional measure of corporate success, they seem to be doing the right thing: increasing sales and growing the value of the company with higher revenue and profit.

That we have a personal affiliation to their previous strategy and ethos is becoming increasingly irrelevant if they’re financially rewarded by curling out turds like this XM monster.

The bellwether will be what happens to the M3/M4. Still great cars, aesthetics aside.

Not even a mother could love that. Some scoffed at the flame surfaced Bangle designs at the time; can't ever see this finding affection though, same of the bulbous iX. Sad that this brand, which for the most part was well known for producing cars with decent lines has come to this, the colossal buying power of overseas markets whose tastes must be at odds with (us) Europeans are surely to blame!

The first M car was actually the M530 Limited Edition built for the German touring car championship (200 were built in South Africa for homologation.)

^ I think the article is referring to the M1 as the first bespoke M car, although it doesn’t really say that properly.

This morning I took an early stroll outside where I live in Marbella and was confronted by this! First one I have seen, it is not prettier in real life than it was in the article and it appears utterly massive. The bonnet height seems so high!

I saw one of these today, parked in an industrial estate. Looks like the owner had gone for a slightly odd colour choice though.

Emperor's new clothes.
If anyone but a respected brand comes out with a design like that, it'll be labeled a monstrosity.

This for example is a much better resolved design in the same vain (although the bar wasn't high).

Disagree entirely, yes some people will buy it for the kudos of owning the 'top BMW', but I'm no bmw fan, have no affiliation with any manufacturer and just like what I like, and I have explained my reasons for liking it elsewhere in this thread. But, if its easier for people to cast holistic assertions, bash on....could it be that people simply like different things?

That's far too pragmatic - this is the facist state of PH. Everybody must conform to liking exactly the same things. If the majority say it's gopping, then it is gopping, alternative subjective views are not permitted. rofl

Oh, they are permitted. Just incredibly rare in this case.

I wish I could agree with you but they are not. If you say you like this design, the response is basically that you're a BMW fan boy or just want to own the top BMW. In effect, that you can't possibly like it and must have some other reason for saying that you do.

Now personally, although I'm not offended by the design of the XM, I'm not a huge fan of it but BMW's other recent designs have all grown on me over time, so this may as well? Who knows? I certainly think that the M3 and M4 look a LOT better IRL than they do in pics.

But if others love this design, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, I'm sure that there are plenty of things that I like that others don't and that's fine (except here of course), where people feel compelled to come on here and say that they don't like something.

There’s been a few people on here who’ve said they like it.
I doubt they’ve had their days ruined by what anyone else has said about it.

Well I would say that the XM has done one thing very successfully indeed: it has nudged the E36 M3 out of the spot for “least loved M Car” - something I’m rather thankful for wink

Any excuse for a photo of the old girl

Looks STUNNING.
