RE: Mini Clubman set to bow out with Final Edition
Discussion
I’ve just sold a JCW Clubman back to supplying dealer after 2 years and 18,000 miles. Bought as the ‘dog’ car but it was excellent. Well put together, fast, fun to drive and given its performance it was economical to run.
We specced it up within £10 of the £40K luxury tax limit, so had everything we wanted in terms of ‘kit’. Selected the 18 inch wheels, non run-flats and adaptive suspension so the ride was also reasonable.
Ironically, the reason we sold it is because we were using it all the time, including an extended trip on the continent with the dog, and we have two other cars sitting in the garage doing very few miles. So a change of car strategy was called for.
It was our 6th BMW Mini over the past 20 years and like all before, as an owner our experience was excellent. Modest depreciation, low running costs and 100% reliability are always good attributes for any car.

I do seem to keep getting conned when it comes to 3 cylinder engines though, and I've read many times on here people praising them for their smoothness(plus the 3 cylinder engine in the GR Yaris seems to be highly rated...or at least nobody seems to slate it anyway), but the 2 I've used have been a bit rough and ready and not much to listen to for me.
Agreed, the refinement in gear (auto) at idle is terrible and the most disappointing thing about the car for me. I can't stand how it vibrates the whole car like a diesel. But triples are always a bit unrefined and I associate the sound with super cheap rental cars so I'm not a big fan of the sounds either! pjv997 said:

What’s the dog? Will my rescue collie fit OK? I see on a prev page a retriever didn’t like the 1st gen, and I can only think I’d need to take the boot floor out to really have enough room…Macron said:

I think it looks good and, compared to the Countryman, it is the style equivalent of an e-type jag....
no Mini is mini these days, journalists should have got over going on about that as the "new" Mini is getting on for 20 years old now..

£37,000. Black plastic ste everywhere. WTF.
When its replacement comes along in the form of another quasi-SUV EV with an even cheaper interior that 'starts' at £45k you'll look back at this and think it was good value.I meant the exterior, I don't understand how people let them (and all the others) get away with putting matt black plastic crap around the wheel arches, bumpers and sills on a car that's nearly £40k.
Clubman is on our list when we go down to 1 car and youngest has flown the nest.
Looks big enough to fit our Sprocker in, fast enough as a Cooper S so I won't get bored, different enough from the usual SUVs, not too expensive to run and refined enough for trips to the continent if required.
Saying that I won't be getting the Final Edition, not a fan of the wheels or silly badges.

Really don't see the appeal of this generation of Clubman, but I always had a soft spot for the original suicide door version.
Out of interest, is the ride on those as spine-destroyingly hard as the Countryman?
A cooper on 16 wheels doesn't have a hard ride at all (but firm and resistant to roll like nearly all modern cars). Cooper and JCW especially will be a different story but i don't know the extent.Out of interest, is the ride on those as spine-destroyingly hard as the Countryman?
