Not many on offer I'm afraid... I've already looked :-(

Theres a nice Aqua (I think) blue one, which would be a good basis for enjoyment and cosmetic fettling.

Adrian E! I remember you from way back when I used to frequent the A8 Parts forum. Yours had a purple interior didn't it?

I had an immaculate mid 2002 Dolphin Grey, 1 previous owner, FSH - paid £5000 in 2013. It was such a cool car. Possibly one of the last, great understated Audis. It did everything with such little fuss and effort that you forgot how capable it was purely due to the lack of unnecessary drama about it - inside and out.

Sold it to make way for the L322 RR that arrived in its place.
Yep, mine was one of approx 4 Final Editions in Avus Silver with mauve (purple) leather - it now lives in the Glasgow area smile I still hang about on the forum, but I'm still a serial VAG owner!

A couple of dolphin greys have appeared out of the woodwork recently - I would've loved one that colour, as my C5 A6 Avant was dolphin and it looked really nice with a good coat of sealant on it smile

Mine was OEM+ spec, so had upgraded DVD based nav, working OEM digital TV, OEM bluetooth. Never got around to fitting the solar sunroof I had for it - that went with the car. The Milltek (NLA) meant you could hear the engine properly - the standard exhaust is a little too refined.

Still the nicest platform I've owned, albeit a 2.8QS - would've loved the hot V8. Not sure I understand the hatred towards the 20-inchers - if I recall this was the first car to be commercially offered with them. Not only do they suit the shape incredibly well, but ride quality isn't sacrificed either.

Obligatory pic of my pearl aqua metallic:

My favourite colour on these... I remember looking round a brand new Aqua S8 in an Audi showroom in 2002, the quality was astonishing. I've never sat in such a comfortable car seat. They made me a stonking finance offer as they were keen to get rid of it!

I test drove a new 2.8. It suited the car very well if I recall, you get all the style with lower running costs. Sometimes the smaller engined cars are sweeter, much like my fathers 3.0 XJ6 which works beautifully.

Had a blast up the Edinburgh City Bypass in one of these that a neighbour kept in mint condition. His had the lipstick red interior which belied the simple silver bodywork. What a savage machine. If there was ever an iron fist in a silk glove this was it. It also seemed to have excellent roll control. This example shows why luxury car manufacturers should be braver in their colour selections. What a handsome beast. Come to think of it that cost the same as my A3 saloon. Time for some man maths?

What is a ‘PH private ad’? Only members can see them? Isn’t that a bit odd, limiting your potential market when selling a car?!
It's an advert from a private individual, rather than a dealer.

The aluminium space frame meant they were very light for such a big car, with the 2.8 only just tipping over 1500kg, IIRC. Certainly didn't feel in any way underpowered by the standards of the time at least, and the engine was beautifully smooth and refined.

The seats (and dual front arm rests) were probably my favourite thing about the experience - unparalleled comfort even until now for me.

The 2.8 is a peach if I'm honest. Tried the 3.7 V8 and a 4.2 in 'L' guise, and couldn't seemingly fault the overall efficacy of the smaller lump, all things considered. An aqua S8 would be the dream though! One day..

One thing to note if comparing A to S models - the main difference to make the S8 faster accelerating than the A8 4.2 is shorter gearing......it's not 'busy' at motorway speeds in the S8, but it doesn't exactly help the fuel consumption!

Was Avus Silver down as “Purple” on the V5 for the S8? You can sometimes pick out the base colour in sunlight on my B5

From memory it was just 'silver' on the registration doc (I sold it in late 2016)

I used to be part of an organisation that ran one of these. (we also had an M5 and RS6 as well as numerous Solihull creations) Great fun.
I used to like the S8 for long runs. Very comfortable and lots of oomph! Happily, I wasn't paying for the fuel.

"Stealthiest super saloon" ?
My clk63 convertible has 491bhp your not even close.
Call me old fashioned but a saloon should have 4 doors and a fixed roof!

I take your point on the AMG Mercedes E and S class saloons, but they are still more shouty/less discreet than that gen of S8.
The E500 is the most direct competitor. 384bhp with the added benefit of a non-borking drive train.

That S8 is a stunning-looking thing though.

I recall reading a thread on a car forum many years ago, written by a bloke who bought one of these third hand. it was his dream car and he probably ignored a bunch of deficiencies in the vehicle, overcome with lust. What followed in the thread was a laundry list of failures, it was mind boggling what broke on the car. It seemed like every time he took it out for a drive it came back on a flatbed.

The thread carried on for page after excruciating page, the repair bills adding up until he couldn't take any more. He sold the thing with about 16-17 thousand spent on it (don't remember exactly) and this is when the car would have been around 4-5 years old. Everything on the car seemed to be so fragile, cooling system, intercoolers, ABS, electrics, the list just seemed to go on forever.

I remember when the A8 first came out. I loved the look of them. Everything was so tasteful and restrained in design. And the thought that they were all aluminium was pretty amazing at the time.
They immediately made all other luxo-barges look old.

Current Audis are garish including the 8.

Owned a D2 4.2 Quattro Sport. An absolutely wonderful vehicle, the Recaro seats were easily the most comfortable seats I have ever had in any car. A high point for Audi, I still regret selling it.
