To this point I’ve found all the performance EVs (Kia, Polestar and Tesla) that I’ve driven totally pointless compared to their base or long range counterparts. If Hyundai can engineer some fun into the Ioniq 5 that would be awesome.

You can make any car look fun on a snow packed circuit, the real test will be do you feel like getting up at 6am on a Sunday morning and going for a b-road blast or track day.

I highly doubt it’s going to be more fun than the i30n, but hopefully it’s a positive step in the right direction. Plus, I’m on the lookout for a family EV/utility vehicle in the not too distant future, it would be great if this can inject a bit of excitement into that category. The cynic in me still thinks the base model will be a better day to day car and the performance dynamics won’t bring any more joy to the experience, hopefully I’m wrong.
Totally agree with you on thatthumbup. I have a EV6 dual motor 325BHP. I did consider the full fat EV6 GT (which as you probably know is the sister car to this Ionic 5 N). However got to say that the standard dual motor is more than quick enough! Cant really see the point of sacrificing almost 25% of your range for maybe 1% more enjoyment. Ok mines a bit more lardy in the corners than the GT or the Ionic N but neither of these are going to be that sharp anyway.

Seems like quite a lot of work if it is, this has been mentioned on other hyundai launches.

Regarding suv vs hatch, there's a number of 'suv's that would be better described as hatchbacks. Batteries under the floor already contribute to the higher driving position and most have minimal off road ability beyond 4wd.

1. Massive mass
2. Vast dimensions
3. With the inevitable steamroller-width tyres, can you imagine how fast it'll have to be going to be having the 'fun' of these modes ? Speeds that are ridiculous on public roads is the answer.
Conclusion - it won't be a driving enthusiast's car at all.

Is it just me but I really can't get excited about the new generation of cars? Touch screens, connections 24/7 to the web and the driver being more and more like an accessory. Nah, not for me, sorry.

Luckily, I think we're the last generation that'll just about get through our lives without having to buy an EV smile

That is, of course, if you don't like buying 'new' cars (which I don't) although that could possibly still work with e-fuel.
