I remember the silly money my dad spent with two recommended specialists chasing a fault in the air suspension (among other things, well almost every other thing) on the similar vintage Disco he had, and that was over 10 years ago on a far lower mileage car.

They're cheap for a reason. The bits that make them go, stop and bits of them move about or light up are almost universally junk.

Look, I love an L322 - I'm on my second and the latest repair cost me £370 two days ago, so I'm definitely in for the long haul because I bloody adore the damn thing.

But that one? Not a chance, and not just because it runs on tractor fuel. It has clearly been poorly looked after by someone who couldn't really afford to run one so unless you are really looking for a whole world of pain, a never-ending project or a bottomless pit to throw money into, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

That rig looks so good it almost makes me want to go out and buy a horse. Almost.

As for this weeks shed - not so much. I think there’s a whole world of frustration and financial pain stored up in that particular example. yikes

The second L322 we've had this year for SOTW and this one is scraping the bottom of the barrel. Assume its a quiet week in the PH classifieds as surely there must be something more worthy than this walking cash emptier.

Not for me I’m afraid; that looks like it’ll be ruinous to own.

Lord no, unless you buy it for spares to keep a better one running.

Never get why people would actually want to line up a rear wiper through the middle of the screen rather than it’s original position out of the way, guess it looks good with gel numberplates 😀

Goes with the vape haze cloud and seat backrest at 45 degrees I guess? On the other hand with this one it could just be because it’s buggered rather than a deliberate ‘style’ statement? laugh

My neighbour had one of these with the same engine and surprisingly, as it was a BMW straight-6, it was such a noisy and unrefined thing that it disturbed me every time it passed.

It basically always sounded like it was accelerating WoT just to potter up the road which, considering the weight of the thing, was very likely the case.

...
I actually laughed out loud at this as just the other day I was out walking in town and one screamed past us like it was on a mission but when I looked across it was barely moving!

Almost certainly broken as mine is.

Once the system fails I guess it loses any sort of pressure / gears to keep it up under the spoiler.

Had my 54 plate TD6 for over 9 years and nothing major went wrong with it but it was always in the back of my mind that it was one big bill away from oblivion.

Sold it to a mate last year and it’s still going albeit he was aware of what he was buying into and I’m sure the rust in the rear arches will kill it within the next year or so.

I was lucky with mine as it was family owned from new so it had good history and I kept on top of things straight away. It took us all over Europe many times without issue.

There’s no way I would have another though!

My E90 330i with the auto gearbox was a bit like that as well. If you planted your foot right down to the floor...the revs would rise really high and it would make a bit of a noise, however you didn't really actually go anywhere though. It used to make me laugh, and it taught me that auto gearboxes don't really suit torque light naturally aspirated engines very well for me.

I think the key to running something like this is a great degree of acceptance. It will clonk and creak, and provided its safe and legal then you have to leave it at that. Chasing perfection (or even a dash free of amber warning lights) is a ruinous, never-ending journey.

Given you are in for £2,000 limits your downside so you have to keep it in proportion.

And it will only ever be a 20 yr old Td6 no matter how good you get it.

Looked at so many of this type of RR but common sense has always prevailed and I bought an X Trail instead.
I always felt that this series of RR was just one step away from total borkage !
Anything that gives me a VED bill higher than my yearly fuel bill has to be something very special and reliable.

I think this is very true. I have a 2006 supercharged one as my daily driver that I picked up for shed money and I have the same philosophy. In the case of mine:

Paint has sun damage
Reverse camera doesn't work
One fairly deep scratch on the rear quarter
TPMS doesn't work
Occasional check engine light from a post cat o2 sensor
Air suspension warning as it was swapped for coils
Coolant level sensor doesn't work
Wheels need a refurb
Registered as stolen recovered

However, absolutely everything else works and the only problem I've had in the last 20k miles was a heater valve that I swapped for about £30. I regularly drive it 1000+ miles over the course of a day or two and it's an exceptionally quiet, comfortable and relaxing car to drive, with all the power you ever need. It gets used off road every day as we live out in the country, and I often fill the boot with rocks / building materials etc so it doesn't have an easy life. I could of course invest in making it perfect, but that would probably exceed the value of the car and wouldn't really change anything about the way it drives. I plan on keeping it until something properly expensive breaks, and then I'll make the decision to fix it up or sell it as spares or repair.
