Our Tiguan Auto renews each year and is paid via Direct Debit

I had an email a few days ago saying the charge for this year is £330 from 1st April and money will be taken from our account on 3rd April

Our car is pre 2017 and classed as band J

I've had a quick look online and as far as I can make out the new rate seems to be £365
All gone up by about 10% I think, RPI linked, but don't quote me on that.

Just to update…no bueno for this. Changing keeper today only allows taxing back from 1st March again, no option to start it from tomorrow.

That's because it a new keeper. Using the new keeper slip and certificate number, you have to buy VED starting NOW, i.e. 1st March. People buying VED for a car that is presently SORN can start it from tomorrow.

Personally I would do the change of keeper today so that the present keeper doesn't get stung for another month's VED. Than buy it tomorrow as the new keeper starting thr 1st. You won't be pursued for less than 1 days' VED, after all, they've had a payment for March. rolleyes

Ok (firstly its a parents car, I don’t have all details to hand)
Well the tax runs out today. The plan is to transfer ownership to another family member tomorrow and then new owner taxes it tomorrow at new cost of £180.
If tax can be purchased today its at the old rate of £145? to start on the same day.
I’m curious if ownership change means tax can be applied from tomorrow as per existing owner or whether it means tax starts back at the 1st March because new owner.
I know its only a small saving, but as its the government, I’ll keep as much ad i can from them.
Edit: i think the rate increase is 165 to 180 so not as big a saving as first thought

In that case, my sincere apologies. I was wrong.

That was the plan, but couldn’t even do a change of ownership because its only available 7am -7pm.
Someone at DVLA swansea must unplug a computer as they leave for the day!
Annoying, but aren’t most things government related.

That's to stop people changing vehicles at midnight. Everytime a vehicle changes hands the govt get two lots of tax for the month. They don't want people avoiding this.

I'll have to wait and see what gets taken from our bank account

no option but to wait and see as I couldn't tax any other way at the moment ( no V11 reminder due to auto renew and no log book handy as we're currently at 2nd home)

if it turns out I could have saved money by sticking to getting reminders and sorting it out online, or walking down to the local post office, the Direct debit may well be getting cancelled.

Monthly Direct Debit does have a 5% surcharge therefore you can save money by paying by a single payment annually.

That is true, but I pay mine monthly as it is easy to stop and put back on sorn without waiting for a cheque back, just cancel the d/d and sorn on the last day of the month and it's all square.

So today’s rant I Went to pay for 6 months of road tax for the 1.6 petrol Mk4 golf
It use to be just under 150 not so long ago now it states £178.25 which is more than the invoiced amount .it seems to just randomly increase each time
Considering I only use the car for short local runs its just like a massive rip off and might just sell the car now .its frustrating as it’s been a good reliable car but also an endless money pit of fees
Anyone else noticed price hikes

They are certainly not spending it fixing the potholes, some of the roads here are now so bad I refuse to drive on them.

If it carries on like this I am thinking about getting a jacked up 4X4 with massive tyres, although I might give the "one life, live it" sticker a miss.

But seriously, if you have something like a Ferrari, how can you even drive on the road anymore?

Maybe we could take a leaf out of Margo Leadbetter's book and only pay for the roads which are maintained properly. smile Road tax would be cheap round here.

Very generous of the DVLA to give every motorist the option to apply for VED at the OLD rate for the last 2 days of March to commence April 1st thus avoiding the increase ££.

Plus, it's still a bargain! If anybody here has driven on motorways in France they'll appreciate what good value our RFL is. (Although the French peages do tend to be better, but not £££££ better)

Good point.

Folks knock the tax regime against motorists here in the UK but one look at e.g. the new car tax in other countries such as the Netherlands and Switzerland with some cars costing up to twice as much as in the UK confirms the UK is cheap!

yes It would be a serious irony overload if a large percentage of the people complaining only kept their jobs and cars because of the furlough scheme that funded it.

At a guess, something like "Your call is in a queue but is very important to us. Please stay on the line until an operator is available".
