I am about to confess something that only my childhood best mate knows

When we around the age of 10, we went down our street and switched the number plates on about 20 cars. Some were still wrong a couple of years later, especially where the model and colour were the same - I recall Hillman Avenger in white x 2 and brown Ford Cortina x 2 that took a while to notice
Despite the various screw holes being in different places?

Same model cars would have the number plate fixings in the bumpers in the same place, so holes would be the same , certainly was when I was a lad in the motor trade.

How many of the cars would be same make and model?

Yes, actual plates being stolen, don't know why that is so surprising.
Because the police don’t seem to take cloning plates very seriously, but theft of a physical plate is much more tangible and easy to prove/charge someone for.

But they do seem to take uninsured vehicles seriously so would hope they do investigate cloned cars, must be easy with ANPR cameras.

Amazing detective work, and feel for you as it must be such a nightmare having to undo the mess they have created.

You're also a much better man than me, as I would have taken matters into my own hands. Reminds me of that Pulp Fiction scene!

If I insure, tax and MOT my car but drive around on a copied plate that I bought from eBay there's nothing the police can do me for?

OP if you have the VIN and can get the real identity of the clone vehicle can you then check for MOT/Ins/Tax? I'm guessing most of those won't be present and if so surely if that info is presented to the police they would have to act then?

Years ago we decided as a joke to swap the number plates on my friends car around so the yellow one was on the front and the white one on the back to see how long it would take him to notice. As you say, this did not work as the holes were in different places.

I then had a brainwave and realised we could turn them upside down instead, it took him a good few days to notice.

OP, now that you have found the car I would be very tempted to go round after dark and pour Nitromors all over the paintwork and slash every tire.

What exactly are they going to do about it, call the Police? I think not.

If there's a car with my registration on it, then I would probably be a tt and rip the plates off the car. After all it's "my reg"? What's the scammer going to do? "Officer that mean man, ripped his cloned plates off my car".
He wouldn’t go to the police, he’d just stab you or beat you to a pulp with a baseball bat if he caught you.
Or, he didnt get the memo. that you desperately needed an excuse not to do it yourself and doesn’t own a baseball bat etc…

Personally, I think the biggest shame is that the OP couldn’t find the persons name and address with a bit more sleuthing.

It would be poetic justice to name him on any historic and future fines received on both cars.

He quoted 2x avenger and 2x cortina, and swapped the plates around , it's not difficult to understand.

The rest dunno, but it's possible.

How do you investigate a cloned car with ANPR cameras? All you’d see is a number plate from another car and nothing would be flagged - unless there was an issue with the car that had been cloned. Checking out the VIN against the number plate requires physical police officers to do that. Or weird clonees like me…

How? I don’t have access to the Police National Computer or whatever it’s called.

Looked at vCheck over lunch and sadly I don’t seem to be able to use the VIN for a history check there.

Am sure no insurance, no tax, no MOT and parked on the street will get more of a response - if I can prove that.

Doesn’t a Carvertical check allow for VIN searches?
https://www.carvertical.com/gb/landing/hand?a=gpa&...

I know from numerous you tube channels it at least gives mot information.

Agreed or just set light to it, TBH the car is probably stolen hence the number of different plates. maybe report to hte police that there is a little doggy in the boot adn there is no windows open, they will be round the quicksmart...

Another day, another cloned car parking ticket…

I think Carvertical can do VIN searches, but the site seems to force you to agree to all their cookies, which I’d rather not do.
