150 cars too big for modern parking spaces
Discussion
As I regularly have to park in 1960's multi storey car parks when visiting clients I found that the (not outrageously huge) BMW 5 Series was simply too big for most spaces, and getting in through the pointlessly-high kerbs without scraping a diamond-cut rim was another layer of stress I didn't need, so I 'downsized' to a 3 series and even that's still pretty tight.
First trip I did some clown scraped my rear wing in a multi storey in York. As others have said, I would happily pay a premium for a bit more space, but I can't see that ever becoming an option.

The USA has different emissions and pedestrian safety regulations for 'Light Trucks', so where cars were heavily legislated against, LTs were not. Hence the rise of the SUV, which like every other ridiculous American nonsense, immediately took over the world as fashionable and here we are in a world where the Fiesta and Focus are discontinued yet ugly, heavy, high versions of the same are selling like hotcakes.
We need to legislate a maximum size for passenger cars, as the latest batch of Q7/XWhatever are just far too big.
We do not have the space or infrastructure found in the USA so let's stop driving their stupid vehicles.
Legislate the size of SUV’s……. Have you ever heard of George Orwell? What an absolutely ridiculous thing to say. We need to legislate a maximum size for passenger cars, as the latest batch of Q7/XWhatever are just far too big.

I don't think it's ridiculous at all. Your car is a piece of personal property which you are using to help you get around more easily and conveniently. But it's still a very large piece of personal property which towns and cities and landowners are expected to store for you when you're not using it. But we've got used to this way of doing things because it makes life very convenient. But why should others bear the brunt of you deciding to bring your unnecessarily large piece of property to their car park? No, I think it's very reasonable that size limits can and should be set by councils and landowners on which you want to stash your private property. Make exemptions for people with large numbers of children or for disabled users.
The only thing that needs to be legislated in todays society is what the military calls “Rule number one- Don’t be a ****”. I drive a Defender, if I see a space that’s clearly too small, or it will inconvenience people, I don’t park in it. If society abided by rule one as a whole, and stopped asking the government to legislate everything that people take a dislike to then the world would be a better place.
I’m already forced to fork over half my salary to the government and councils to pay for “services” or some arbitrary new control measure they want to impose on me this week. Having someone tell me what car I can and can’t drive? Or buy with money that IVE earned? Do one.

Lots of people obviously require these massive cars to compensate for having something else that is tiny.Don't get me started on the number of people who buy these cars and clearly have no skill to actually drive them. Staying within the white lines on a motorway, going around a corner and staying in the correct lane or even pulling into a side road without cutting the corner seem impossible skills for a lot of people.
No wonder cars have to be fitted with lane departure warning by default now.

Great idea to have extra large spaces just for these crazy big SUVs and charge them double but no doubt they would try and squeeze into the normal sized bays to save a few quid.
You could give them SUV sized spaces but they'll just keep doing what they're already doing... Parking badly so that they take up 2 or 3 normal sized spaces. philrs03 said:

I take it you've never read Orwell. I can't remember the size of cars being mentioned in either Nineteen Eighty-Four or Animal Farm.
Besides, over-regulation is more of a Huxley theme, even then we're drawing a very long now.
I saw an Austin Maxi on the road yesterday and always remembered them as being a fairly large car when I was a kid but it looks pretty small by todays standards. It's the width that is the main problem I wouldn't mind if legislation came in to limit maximum width for a passenger car that required an extra classification on your licence to be able to drive an "extra large one" a bit like max weight.

Yes and for this reason Private car ownership needs to ultimately be banned. It is inevitable that it has to happen one day in the future. The road network and related infrastructure will eventually not cope - it is under severe stress already - and when that happens, people will be forced to give up their cars and move to Public and Shared transport. To make that 'fair', all Private will have to be banned.
Just as EV is now killing off ICE, infrastructure will eventually lead to Private ownership being killed off too.
Enjoy it all while you can.

The easiest way to control the growth of private traffic is to make the driving test MUCH harder to pass. More than 3 minors results in a fail. Add in 90-minute written exam. Make it much more like obtaining a pilot's licence. Those who need licences will invest the time needed to make it happen. Those who care more about their Instagram life will decide that shared transport fits the bill better. The oldest licenced drivers will start dying off, and within 10-15 years the problem will be solved.

Sadly too many of our society think they are something special and do act like ****s, they don't have the brainpower to realise they are the problem...I drive a Defender, if I see a space that’s clearly too small, or it will inconvenience people, I don’t park in it. It’s absolutely terrifying that people that think like you are allowed the vote. The road network and related infrastructure will eventually not cope - it is under severe stress already - and when that happens, people will be forced to give up their cars and move to Public and Shared transport. 1 Make the spaces bigger - they won't do that if it's a pay car park (less revenue)
2 Make the cars smaller - manufacturers won't like that because they won't be able to charge inflated prices for larger vehicles that make people they think they are buying more for their money.
3 Put sliding doors on all new vehicles.
There's definitely scope for more cleverness in door design, e.g the Renault Avantime design from a couple decades ago.2 Make the cars smaller - manufacturers won't like that because they won't be able to charge inflated prices for larger vehicles that make people they think they are buying more for their money.

The longer doors on coupe body styles make life hard enough already.
Gotta laugh a little that just about every poster moaning about people having massive SUVs either have an SUV/ crossover listed in their garage or currently / previously owned a normal car that is longer / wider / heavier than a lot of SUVs, way bigger and heavier than my wife's SUV/crossover
One of them being wider, only a handspan shorter and very nearly as hefty as my full size American pickup truck
