A top fueler hits 60 in 0.4, 100 in 0.9 and 300 in less than 4.0. But you can't run it in your driveway.
How long will it take for electric drag cars to beat those numbers?normalbloke said:

0-60 in under a second; range 12 metres. It's the ultimate EV.
It's possible that a male driver may have managed to get a quicker time. Perhaps not though.

When I see students doing things like this even while maintaining their regular course work I admit to being blown away by their spirit and determination. Regardless of any labels, these folks are having fun, and what are the goals of higher education, anyway, but this?
Mechanical Engineering departments take Formula Student very seriously. I used to work in Mech Eng at the University of Surrey, and there were several group projects in the 2nd and 3rd years working on parallel - one on suspension, one on drivetrain and so on. There were usually 2-3 cars being worked on in parallel, since development took more than a year. They were also supervised by members of staff with automotive experience. Winning at FS is a big deal for a Uni and makes excellent promotional material (as it clearly has here), so departments put a lot of resource into it. There were also a lot of categories - acceleration was one but there were others (handling etc). The only thing they didn't actually do was head-to-head racing.Surrey also has the benefit of being 4 miles from Woking, hence the workshop having a rolling 650S chassis for inspiration..

How long will it take for electric drag cars to beat those numbers?Past the direct drive launch advantage that EVs have, the challenge becomes the conversion of stored energy into kinetic energy at the tarmac ..... Nitro vs L-ion is still a war that I think belongs to the chemicals and combustion.

This is their coursework - they're students at various motorsport/engineering degrees. There's a whole racing series, "Formula Student" which runs every year for multiple universities.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
