Had mine since launch and just hit 30k, great cars but was never won over with the gear change. If the price is right I’ll swap for an auto. Question is stick with red or go grey.

Red, obviously! Too many boring black/silver/white cars about, and the red really suits it.

Exciting news and it sounds like they’ve made some intelligent changes there, like making the front bumper easier to repair. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are some more subtle improvements that they don’t want to advertise such as improving the manual shift. I want one.
According to Autocar, there are indeed improvements to the manual shift

I have so much love for Toyota at the moment. The engineering and the focus they have is superb.

The response to feedback from the customer is manifest.

This is great news for me. A whole bunch of small improvements in useful area. New dash is not good in photo's but hopefully better in the flesh and will be more usable (and not a deal breaker). But the main good news is they are going to carry on making it, so when my Mk1 gets to 10 years old and runs out of warrantly I will chop it in for a 2 to 3 year old Mk2 and then be set for warranty covered driving until about 2037 but which time I may only be fit for a wheel chair or if I can still drive there is an auto for me to move into

Thank you Toyota !!

True.

And surprisingly I also find myself less critical because it’s a traditional auto rather than a DCT. We know from the ubiquitous ZF boxes that they can work in performance cars, and as with ZF, Toyota/Aisin seem to have gone to some lengths to ensure it locks in most situations, so it really might be a nice thing to drive.

As much as the exterior changes seem to have improved cooling/airflow I prefer the current model exterior styling. The interior looks much better and the seating position adjustment is a big positive.

On price I would expect it’ll actually be a fair bit more on finance than the original. 1) because they know they can sell it, which wasn’t clear pre GRY launch if anybody would actually go for it. 2) because we’re not in a 0% base rate free money era anymore.

ie a £34k car on a 0%/1.5% PCP vs a £40k car on 5-8% PCP will be a few hundred a month more.

What a beaut!
Sorry for the silly question, but have you had to service your car every 6,000 miles as I wasn’t sure if that was just for the first service or for all of them?

It looks like they've addressed most of the issues raised with the mk1 - the seating position, the visibility etc, but what's with that 80s Volvo centre dash?

I was tempted by the Mk1 but as it's kinda similar to my '16 Focus RS, I went with the GR86 instead as it's a RWD "old fashioned" sports car. But this Mk2 looks a more complete car so it's desirable - but worth getting when the Focus is here to stay? Probably not?

Kudos to Toyota for updating an already niche and special car - I bet they've been surprised how well it's been received so thought it's worth updating. Doubt a Circuit version will be much less than a Tax killing £40k+ though.

I think everyone who wanted a manual one bought one, and now the comments/excitement are coming from those, like me, who now have the option.

I’d assume that if you take MK1s into account, there will always be more manuals overall on the second hand market.

The Carwow video is an interesting watch. Toyota listening to their customers and acting on feedback.

Simple things but it makes me love them as a brand.

Well, it looks like it’s happening, then! All looks good apart from the new dash - what’s that all about?! All my wife would like to know is does the Passenger seat still need resetting after you’ve moved it to get the kids in the back? biggrin

Pricing news will be interesting - less than £40k?
Infinitely better than a stuck on ipad and a direct response to the criticism of seat height and visibility out the windscreen.

Colours are the only negative in my eyes. Shame that they could only add grey to an already limited palette.

The pearl white is the colour to go for IMO and I usually try and steer clear of shades of grey.

And why not, when you order a pizza, not everyone wants the same toppings, plenty of folk would buy a given car but for the fact it has the wrong gearbox, so now those who arent into manuals can have a GRY, which I think is great.

I'll take a manual, but can totally see why some prefer autos.

This is actually quite tempting, flog my Fiesta ST as a deposit and sign on the dotted, hmm, would it be thirty grand more fun ?

Interesting to see what it does to values of the first gen cars, they start at like 27 grand for a circuit pack that isnt a cat car, but get the impression they arent easy to move on based on the price history on AT. They seem to hang round for months. No shortage of them out there if you want one, 130 or so for sale, so they arent a 30k car any more, or anywhere near, probably need to be nearer to 23/24 to shift I expect. Now the hype has died down, a new model is coming and there is less money about, anything at 30k plus now is dead in the water, some with no miles for 40k plus, good luck with that.

+1. One of the things that wasn't often mentioned about the GT86 was that Toyota continually improved it behind the scenes, every year up to the facelift if I remember correctly. Just little things under the skin that hardly anyone knew about (drowned out by all the "it needs a turbo" comments!) but that gradually made it a better car.

On the GRY, it's great that Toyota are keeping it going, and the improvements are generally excellent. I wouldn't buy the auto but full respect for developing it, and for most people it'll be the faster option for a circuit or empty B road. Hilarious that they've gone from "stuck-on iPad" to "stuck-on dashboard" and I'm not a fan of that - as others have said it's not a reason for not buying one and I'm certain it'll be a brilliant car.

I was tempted to put down a deposit for the original GRY but decided to get a big V8 to go alongside my SC GT86; I've recently been thinking about what might replace the GT86 and would definitely consider the GRY.

Manual will probably be the most sought after long term. I guess they will have a high finance rate on these new ones. They don’t need to give them away !

I’ve always been a fan of the front end of these but the challenging profile and rear end still put me off. I saw a white one up close this week, still a rare sight on the roads, but it actually looked much better that the photos suggest! Still, I wouldn’t want to own one but I can understand the draw for some people and I’m glad they exist nonetheless.

Quite! If this is released in June that will be when the final payment on mine is due which will be around £14K The car will be 3.5 years old and perhaps worth £24K as a trade-in. If the new one is £40K then that's a £30K cost to change and tbh I'm not sure its worth it.
I would be very surprised if the value of the pre-facelifts now holds up that strong after 3 years especially chopping it in and now we are seeing car prices dip a bit.
