I've run my fair share of private cars and fun private ones too. They were all money pits.
As someone with an engineering background i like the relative simplicity of and EV. I've no idea how the next few years will pan out but friends that have much older versions of the car I have and not seen mechanical or drive issues. I like also the cheap rate electric overnight applies to the whole house and if my electrical supplier decides to charge during the day at the same cheap rate I get the whole house benefit of that as well. I see that as a win win.

Maybe more so for electric as the incentives are there but I think it is disingenuous to think that because you or I dont want something, that nobody else does, best part of seventy million people in the UK and they dont all like the same stuff.
For example, noticed they sell baby Octopuses pickled in jars in some supermarkets, not something I would ever pick up but there are obviously enough folk out there that do buy them to make it worth stocking them, people like different stuff, even jars full of baby Octopus which I find weird. Who has a snack of baby Octopus from a jar when watching a film ffs ?
So, how would you feel if the only food available was pickled baby octopii? I guess you'd just shrug your shoulders and suck it up?
Be happy for those who like baby octopii and accept that your life is slightly worse?
Nod sagely while people tell you that you're an idiot for not liking baby octopii and that they're delicious while being better for you and the environment; please won't someone think of the children?

In fifteen years time we will all be asking how the powers that be could have been so deluded into thinking EV's were ever going to be sustainable.
So no one will travel anywhere and will simply look at all the dorment EVs littering the land that they refuse to enter and tut? That's an interesting future indeed.
I wouldn't mind a EV at all, but not one that's been rendered totally obsolete by rapid progress, can be bricked or hacked from afar, slams on the brakes when it sees some moss and has all its controls centred on one nipple that you have reach into the footwell to access.
So Morris Minor it'll remain for now.

The car I now drive makes me smile in the same way as my 205Gti did even though now i do car use as anything other that a tool to fulfil a function. My main pleasures are elsewhere but do not deny money facilitates. It was ever thus.

Yep, currently a lot of used EV bargains at most price points..
0-5K Nissan Leaf
5-10K Renault Zoe, Volkswagen small EV’s, BMW i3
10-20K most newer Stellantis EV’s, Tesla Model 3
20-30K - Audi E-Tron, Mercedes EQC, Jag iPace, Polestar 2
30-40K BMW i4, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq models, Tesla Model X
40K-50K - Porsche Taycan, BMW iX
50K+ - Audi e-tron GT, Mercedes-Benz EQS
Exactly !0-5K Nissan Leaf

If I wasn't salary sacrificing my new iX, I would likely buy one of the £50k used ones. In fact there is a 2022 model with 33k miles for £42k which looks perfect

Well you could equally argue that why do people come to a site called PISTONheads when EV's dont have them
Don't they? Could make stopping interesting. "A piston is a component of reciprocating engines, reciprocating pumps, gas compressors, hydraulic cylinders and pneumatic cylinders, among other similar mechanisms."

I was at a car supermarket for my mum, £30k on a BMW 520i or £30k on an audi E Tron with all the toys and the bigger battery, I know where my money would be going.
Granted i lease, but my EQC is around 12k for 2 years and 20K miles total…. insanely cheap for a brand new car

The decline in private sales is likely due to a combination of negative press and Liz Truss.
Current used values would appear to back that up as it's a great time to buy a year old EV. There are some stonking cars out there if you're in the market for a 12 month old car.
I doubt most people even remember who Liz Truss is, let alone allow her to influence their car-buying decisions.Current used values would appear to back that up as it's a great time to buy a year old EV. There are some stonking cars out there if you're in the market for a 12 month old car.

Yay, another thread with people ready to fight over EVs.
We haven’t had one of these in a day or so.
You have to wonder whether PH has a future in the lives of most people round here. It’s akin to drinking in a pub that doesn’t sell your favourite tipple. Why would you bother? If you hate EVs so much, why occupy your time and brain power incessantly arguing about them. It’s quite strange. We haven’t had one of these in a day or so.
How many new car articles and reviews do you think are going to be about EVs in the future?

I’d be interested more in how many of those are pre-registered EVs by the dealers, Auto Trader is flooded with them.Tye Green said:
another private buyer here.
to say "surely nobody in their right mind actually buys an EV" suggests that you are able to know for certain, in advance, the relative running costs, associated risks and eventual resale value of EVs v ICE vehicles. how do you get such knowledge?

cost me about £1400 to keep on the road last year including fuel, tax, servicing and insurance over 8,000 miles. not bad value for a car that prinicipally does around town driving. if i bought a quick piston car it would rarely get up to temperature and cost a fortune when it goes kaput. 0% finance so the stack of cash that would have gone to pay for it is earning 4%.
depreciation is another story and not great for me - bought when the market was heavily inflated so experienced rapid losses, but can't see it sliding much further and in any case depreciation is realised when i sell it which will be in a few years time.

I did, private buyer. Over 50% of all cars sold vehicles sold have been fleet/business purchases for as long as I can recall and that's about 50 years.
On my 2nd now.
1st I had from 2017 till last month. It was coming upto 9 years old this March.
Hopefully the new one lasts longer given the bigger battery and specification.
I paid for an ICE car to be converted to electric propulsion.

Is that it? Surprised to be honest. I still see EVs as a white goods kind of purchase. Will only ever be a head over heart thing. Not for me, for the foreseeable at least.
Man, the future sucks, huh?
That's fine you can stick to your ICE but to say EVs are just white goods when 90% of the ICEs are exactly the same stated with the Model T, all that time ago.Man, the future sucks, huh?
The future is looking brilliant performance wise and not upsetting the neighbours or chucking out Nox.
