Why? Battery will get better and more range and will become the mainstream for people. They want to be become fully electric by 2030.
That is assuming battery becomes mainstream.

For the UK, a snowball's chance in hell.

Sales of diesel cars have already dropped off a cliff - in 2022 and 2023 more than 2x BEV's were sold than diesels, in each year. [2024 is already 3x BEV's sold vs diesel]

No great loss tbh - they had their time, now we are wiser and want rid !

They stopped making the 5 cylinder ones ages ago, these 4 pot diesels were as nasty as any of their type. Nothing whatsoever of value has been lost here.
I was going to say the same thing. The 4 cylinder diesel I tried in an XC60 was lousy to use for me.

A decent 6 or 8 cylinder diesel still suits certain cars though for me. They definitely suit a big and heavy SUV I reckon, plus they are good if you do a lot of towing as well.

I personally like a good diesel engine to cover high mileage too.

It’s a change worth noting, but not sure I would want an oil burner on my drive now tbh.
Fair point, i’ll buy BEV next time.

But my 10 year old Skoda Superb refuses to die!
60+ mpg/£33 annual car tax/£290 fully comp
Annual diy oil/filer £40

Will probably still be going in 2029

Best car i’ve owned

Cheap/comfortable on the UK downtown Gaza roads

I was astonished by how awful the 4 cylinder clatterbox was in the Volvo XC90 that I travelled in. It has actually put me off buying one. Same with the Jaguar F pace 2.0d.

Aside from the range concerns, I'd honestly rather have an EV.

We had a diesel XC90 which was a brilliant family car but the engine whilst effective enough, was definitely the weakest point. I've no doubt the EX90 that replaces it will be far superior to drive, just a shame it has also lifted the price close to £100k.

Surprised it has taken them this long to be honest - fewer than 5,000 new registrations last month of pure Diesel cars, pretty niche now. I wonder who'll be first out of the German manufacturers to do the same? I guess it'll probably VAG.

Quite. People only like them because they're cheap. [adenoidal]Aw I get 700 miles for 30p[/adenoidal] Yeah 700 miserable, filthy miles. Good riddance.

That is exactly the same reason why folk like EVs as well I reckon.

This^ I’ve got a 5 cylinder V40; blue with cream heated leather. Although 10yrs old it’s a lovely thing to drive. Add in the caterham and I’ve got a great two car garage.

Yep it's largely a cost thing. But saying that, diesel suits some cars very well.

As part of a little fleet, I am very much enjoying my W212 E250CDI. It's truly fantastic at what its designed to do.

Yep. While I'm not going to wax lyrical about the 5 cylinder D5 that's in my XC70 - because when all's said and done it's a diesel - the newer 4 cylinder engines they're putting in the XC90 do seem pretty rough for a premium car. Having said that it's quite likely that my next car will be a diesel too in the form of a Land Cruiser with a 4-cyl engine, but that one doesn't seem quite so bad. Not good, just not as bad.

Would have a D5 on the drive any day of the week.

Great engines and will be missed, however i will still be buying them SH until they run out.
+1
We've had 3 D5 powered cars. It's an excellent engine.

I ran an S90 D4 for a couple of years. Beautiful car, terrible drivetrain. Engine was relatively gutless for a car that size.

I'd say convenience of home charging (for those lucky enough to have it), and the relative refinement/ease of use are probably higher on the list of things most people appreciate about EVs myself...rather than them just being cheap.
