I bought two new cars and one nearly new... they're all long dead according to MOT history.

Ford KA, Ford Fiesta Zetec S and a Mitsubishi Galant. No survivors!

The M3 Evo I bought new in ‘97 is still going strong.

My old 2002 Clio 172 Cup, LX52 WJM, is alive and well, I've even spoke with the current owner. EY15 DNE, an insurance write off, still lives, it was a good car, and eminently repairable when we parted. My first car, Saxo VTR, FX52 CTV is long dead. My 2 Kangoos, I'd imagine live, they were both very dependable. Sarah's Rav4, CW03 NBZ, last MOT'd Sept 2020. My 3 MK3 Mondeos, can't remember the plates, I killed one of them mind.

Sadly, despite being able to list ownership of nearly a hundred cars, not one of them has lasted more than 10 years beyond my parting with it.

An another front, keeping cars on the road, I try to 'even the balance' a bit. My Checker Cab has been with me for 28 years, My 2002 Targa 36 years and my 100e 14 years. I would have thought that they will outlast me by a good margin!

My 1999 C43 estate is still going; lasted spotted at Bicester a couple of years ago. My 2000 C43 saloon is also still on the road. As is the 2005 E500 that replaced it.

Everything before them seems to have gone.

I've not had a huge number of previous cars - two are dead and two survive. The oldest is the now 20 year old Skoda Fabia VRS still going on just under 200k miles, over 12 years since I parted with it.

Sadly I am the same. Sierra and cavalier company cars from the 90s all long dead. Two Saab convertibles and a Volvo C70 all dead. Porsche 911 was exported. Two Boxsters still going strong though, as is the e46 M3, so I guess the cars that people cherish are still with us !

Interesting, I’ve not checked before but seems my first ever new car, a 2000 316i Compact, hasn’t been MOT’d since 2016. It seemed to get to 150k miles, but had a few years of failures on oil and fluid leaks in particular in the run-up

The one I’m really a bit sad about is my old 2003 325ti Compact, as that was a great little car. Sport trim 6-speed manual, but looks like it went to the big farm to play with other cars in 2017. Again, quite a number of years of failures in the run-up to its demise, but in this case nothing that looks like it was too catastrophic- brake lines, tyres, suspension parts. Looks like it got to about 140k miles

I sold my 1999 Audi S4 in 2008 on about 110k, and its last mot in Jan was at 208k

Notable history in 2012 someone clocked up 29878 miles between MOTs!

In ‘06 I bought a new Focus ST 2.5. I sold it about 7 years later after 60k miles. Best car I’ve ever owned and have often thought if I won the lottery I’d track it down and have it restored. Last year some random chap sent me a message on WhatsApp saying he’d bought it as a project and was interested in what mods I’d done to it. He sent me a picture. It looks like it’s had a bit of a hard life, few questionable bodywork mods, bit of accident damage. Felt a bit sad for it as it was cherished and absolutely mint when I sold it on.

Regularly see my old 07 Accord Estate cruising around.
Traded in my old 02 Civic 3dr, and the salesman, instead of sending to auction, has kept it for himself. He's going to refurb it.

All dead except 2 that are showing as SORN although their MOTs expired in 2015 and 2018.

The one that was MOT’d up to 2018 is a 1973 Land Rover so it might live again.

They're all going strong although my first car is 3 weeks late for it's MOT so might have died (it's a 2005 Ibiza on 96k miles).

They all seem to be dead now. I'm like the grim reaper of cars.

I suppose if you think about the survival statistics of the majority of cars it's far more likely if you bought a new car that it won't make it to the afterlife and will just die when the running costs exceed the value. Seem to be what's playing out here.

I check on my previous cars from time to time - I was surprised to see a 2011 Merc which I'd had to return due to a persistent oil leak still on the road several years later. I bought it used approved and they had it back for repairs 4 times in 4 months, everytime it came back it was worse.

Sad to see my old mk1 Skoda Octavia vRS is no longer on the road - that was the car I've kept longest (9 years).

Around 1996 I bought an early 911. It had originally been a Swiss car - I think from 1970 - but had been converted to RHD at some point. It had had many changes. A 3 litre engine from an SC, roll cage, stripped out, upgraded brakes, rose jointed suspension. It had been raced on circuit and I think won some hill climb championship. My wife cried when I bought it and brought it home!

Roll forward to 2014 and I was looking to buy another early 911. One the cars I looked at was very raw. I think it had a 3.5 litre engine. The number plate seemed a bit familiar (I’m not good at remembering number plates). I was in contact with the seller…and he said my name seemed familiar. When he checked the file of invoices he found my name on some, so it was my old car!

I didn’t buy it back though as went for something a bit less extreme.
