Never been a fan of bubble arches, I much prefer the standard twincam look of 1968. More discreet, better looking, a proper Q car back in the day. IMHO of course.

The stuff of dreams! What a lovely thing it is! Good to know that it’s going to be galloping down some forest stages and not retired! Well done Racing Pete.

Never understood the rear spot lamp... can anyone enlighten me?
Reversing light I believe. The bigger the better when you need to get back on track after an off in deepest, darkest Kielder Forest in the middle of the night. wink
Cracking car and a great, storied find! Especially with the slightly tenuous family connection wink I learned to drive in an Escort identical to this apart from, well, pretty much everything that makes this car so special!

I'd forgotten about that reversing light style. I remember fitting one to my Mk1 Cortina as follows:
  1. Remove the fuel filler from the outside at the back beside the number plate and mount it in the boot (so "bad people" can't syphon the fuel out!)
  2. Mount the spotlight over the hole and concoct a bracket to hold it in place
  3. Optionally, wire it up to a switch on the dashboard (no fancy built-in reversing light switches on the gearbox!)
  4. Remember, if you had wired it up, to fit a 21 watt bulb so Mr Plod couldn't put your name in his book
  5. Look cool!
Had one on my mini. Was pulled over by police, who'd seen me reversing out of a parking space, to tell me off as it was 'clearly brighter than 21w'. Advice duly received, noted and ignored. It was never an issue again. biglaugh

Cracking Escort BTW. I have a book in the loft about the history of the Circuit of Ireland rally, probably published late 70s, early 80s. I know there are pictures of mk1 Escorts in it, must check if this is one of them.

Lovely article, for those of a certain age the escort was always the car you fitted the wider wheels and loud exhaust, just hoping it would turn into the car reviewed. Seriously jealous but well done for achieving your dreams.

I will be keen to see if you find anything… I haven’t been able to see if the car made the finish of the 1971 version still, but is in the background of some service shots mid-rally.

I love the car.
I too rallied a "Mk1 Twink" in the 70s and 80s.
It would be fantastic to compete in historic rallying.
Go for it and good luck

Lovely indeed. Let’s hope you keep the car straight, and yet spend most of the time sideways! smile

A great car. My dad raced in the 71 Rally of GB (his last year before my mum pointed at his children and said hmm...)...he kept his car, and I learnt to drive in it... admittedly, he removed the BDA engine but left everything else in... it was quick to 40 and then topped out about 60. So many happy memories, I don't anyone that doesn't like a good Mk1!!!

Looking forward to hearing how you get on. My first car was a Mk1 Escort (1300), my next a Mk2 Harrier. When I saw that car come through I was tempted, but I knew I couldn't give it the future it deserves. You can.

Fantastic. And a great story too. It must be such a nice feeling to have the car after all these years.

A good friend of mine did something (almost) similar a few years ago. He used to compete on stage rallies in East Anglia in the early 1990s in an MG Maestro (won the local 2.0-litre championship too no less), and there was someone competing in a Lancia HF 4WD that he always lusted over. It was an ex-Lancia press car, basically Group N, but with the Martini livery applied just for fun. About 10 years ago, the car resurfaced after many years in storage and he managed to buy it and do a couple of rallies in it himself. He just keeps it as a toy now though. His need for the Lancia led to me buying his 1992 Escort RS2000, which was featured on PH as a reader's ride some years ago.

Hi Pete.

From memory, it was a long time ago and I was only 11 at the time, my Dad said they had retired due to diff failure. They were not listed on the Ewrc website as finishers. HTH.

Tim

Amazing Tim, and I am honoured and privileged to take on your Dad's car to further rallying fun. If you have any more details about the car that you remember then love to hear them. Thanks smile
