Nothing new here. With a 500+ tank range, these prices are academic really.

Motorway services always are expensive. Don't use them. I'm not far from Kinross Services on the M90, which is always expensive. But a few miles up the A977 is one of the cheapest garages around (Shell). Unless you are really desperate to fill up or in a real hurry, it's never far to go to find an alternative local station and with the internet it's not like they are hard to find.

Sainsbury's or Tesco's in Stirling isn't much of a diversion to avoid the motorway services and they'll have a much better and cheaper range of snacks.
The Fossoway Garage has, at times, had amazing prices. Recently not been in the same league as a year or two ago but always worth a check on petrol prices website if I'm passing.

If you think the roundabout at Junction 9 are bad, the Shell petrol station one junction up at J10 is off probably the worst surfaced road I've driven on, the seam between the 2 lanes is so deteriorated narrower wheels (<195mm maybe) literally can get a bit stuck in them and you have to fight to get the car back out again.

At least that Shell petrol station (very recently opened and not sign marked off the M9) has prices within reach of those elsewhere in Stirling.

The Stirling area tends to be more expensive across the board for fuel than Perth or Glasgow/Edinburgh heading either way, so even though I live locally I try and avoid it as best as I can.

Todhills on the M74 north of Carlisle always takes the pi$$ . Yet J43 Tesc0 and J44 A$da are vastly cheaper and about 300/ 400 yards from the respective junction!

My understanding is that if you have a fuel card from your employer you/they get decent prices

If not its somewhat spendy

Im pushing 50 and have probably topped up with motorway fuel once in my entire life as its an utter rip off

Oh, rip off??? Sorry, motorway services are really difficult to service with tankers hence the uplift on prices. Yep a petroil tanker has to drive down a motorway then spend hours navigating small roads to get to a motorway filling station. Possibly............

In France and elsewhere I happily gas my car on the Autoroute as prices are decent. Similarly I'll also stop for lunch as that costs a sensible amount too. Having said that in France youre likely to get tasty, high quality food at a decent price which British people dont dig on............

They take us for mugs in the UK.........

Cheers............

Pfft! If he really wanted to exhibit profligate money burning prowess he'd go by train!

It didn't bother me when I had 4 cylinder turbo-diesels that could 5 or 6 hundred miles on a tank. laugh

But my current fun car is a straight 6 petrol that has a claimed Extra-urban consumption of 32.8 mpg (or 8.6 litres per 100km) and only a 55 litre tank if I get 300 miles from a tank that's a result, so it is an issue in that!

Still in general is considerably more expensive on Autoroute than off & at a supermarket, can be similar to UK differences.

Unless you have a fuel card gotta be a bit nuts filling on the motorway regularly.

Just as an example today I filled on M25, was £28 more at pump price than this weeks price on my fuel card, which is pretty much same as my local supermarket.

If you do a lot of miles as I do & you might fill twice & even occasionally 3 times a day that's a hell of a difference over a year.

The OP may be onto something here. Some motorway services may be looking to apply a price premium to petrol and baked goods(!!!) to account for convenience and the elevated rents they are charged in those locations. I wonder how long this has been going on…..

Hartshead Moor on the M1 always used to be the one that took the piss even more than standard.

I doubt I've spent more than £50 of my own money at motorway service stations.

If the uplift was just a few pence I'd be inclined to use them.

The fossil fuel charges are high, but the EV markup is bonkers. I was at Lancaster services on Saturday and having a look at an EV on charge - 75p/kwh. That is literally ten times the price of home charging overnight.

(No I haven’t got an EV before the spittle starts to foam; I wouldn’t mind one though. Excellent things - except if you have to charge them on a motorway).

I know motorway services charge a premium for fuel prices but BP at Stirling are truly extracting the urine, 183p/litre which is a good 25p more expensive than prices in general.
Come to the Netherlands and make yourself feel better - typical motorway rate is around 2.20 - 2.30 euro, around £2 a pop, and that is for standard, not high octane. Even in cities/suburbia the rate is often 2.05-2.10.

M5 Frankley was my first thought.. I filled up near my town the other week before a long journey at 148.9. Passed Frankley on the way down and was surprised to see it was 'only' 155.9 there... 6p premium over a local garage seems bloody good these days.

Ha, like it. They did start shunning their Range Rovers in favour of helicopters. Understandable for goodwood and Silverstone where driving can take hours, not so much 'nipping to a hotel for the weekend'

Between him, his brother and his dad they were spending £6k/month on the fuel card for their various cars. Even with 110 cars between and paying silly motorway prices them it still didn't make sense as they couldn't have driven the miles required each month!
Surely with a fuel card you don't pay the pump price but instead a lower average price for fuel, it's been a long time since I had one but I'm sure that was the case.
D'oh. You are, of course, correct. It was 2 years ago, I'd forgotten about the separate rates for fuel cards.

It just shows how if you can be bothered to be prepared you can save a lot. Each car at home is currently full with fuel. Petrol ones fuelled at 139.7, diesel at 149.7 and the daily at 143.7. So I can leave and get home in most cars wihout spending on fuel until I get home. Worst case I may chuck £10 at a motorway services for a get you home splash and dash.

Same with drinks and snacks. 2 bottles of water at WHSmith in the services ~ £3.50. 12 bottles are £1.79 in Aldi. Same with snacks. It just boils down to how chaotic and lazy you are.
My sister simply doesn’t look at the cost of anything, if she wants it she pays. She is great for profit margins
Aah, so she's the person who pays £3.40 for 102g of Maltesers at Shell stations. I wondered who they were putting those out for.

V Power is heading back towards £2 again, sigh.

There are enough suckers, it seems, for the mega pricey confections - usually chubby ladies.
