It's a tragedy that this got lost in the noise as it made me laugh!

I'm also puzzled by the alleged link between boring people and owning an EV. I have no interest in an EV but I really am quite dull, so that screws that theory.
Perhaps "boring" is a bit on the harsh side, and I think "sensible" is a fairer assessment for me. I associate an EV with someone who cares about the environment, doesn't eat meat, and gets excited about "efficiency". So they are the things that I personally associate with electric cars rightly or wrongly.

The reality is that I'm probably way off the mark with that, however that is how I see it in my head though.

It's all to do with tax. I don't think many owners do it for environmental reasons.

They are just too poor to drive a proper car... smile.

Everyone I know who has one does it because the BIK tax rules make it the only sensible choice.

A couple of them are petrolheads and have a combination of motorcycles and interesting older cars. The others are just normal people, they all quite like their EVs though for the performance and refinement. 99% of people have never owned an ICE car you or I would consider interesting anyway, and an EV is miles nicer to use than the four pot diesel rattlers most people came out of, or the tiny boosted petrol alternatives today.

I think we're well out of the phase where they were only owned by boring advocates who buy some 1st gen half baked thing and drone on about it.

Looks better than the last one, but not my cup of tea, but no one can say these aren't blisteringly fast cars. I had my ass handed to me by a duel motor model 3, against my 2012 C63, even in maximum attack mode, 60mph to 140ish on an empty duel carriageway, the model 3 gapped me every time, very impressed by the instant midrange acceleration and the C63 wouldn't stand a chance from the lights.
Tesla should make a nice looking version, they would sell more.

Yeah, there will be cars to dispose of, but its basically like any other car in the main, its a bodyshell, brakes, interior, plastics etc, only big difference is the battery. The battery is becoming sought after for re manufacturing, recycling and as home energy storage.

For storage an EV battery is ideal as it holds a lot of power and even if its no longer much use for the instantaneous high load discharge of an EV, if it can still hold a lot of charge it can supply a house easily as its much lower demand, storing enough solar energy for example to keep a house going for a fair amount of time.

So far EV batteries arent piling up based on what I have read/heard but its early days yet, but as you get more EV's there will be a bigger market for secondhand and re-manufacturered batteries, like every technology that comes about a support system comes into being. I remember when Fuel Injection, ecus and turbochargers were scary and new, but companies emerged to service that demand.

And, some are lasting pretty well, watched this on an older Model S, 450k miles,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gPv1obYK_8

I think the EV gets a bad rap based on the earliest ones, with the battery packs that degraded quickly as they had no cooling/conditioning functions, plus they were early designs.

Plus the reports of fires, now many think that EVs catch fire more than ICE vehicles,

Someone posted this locally,

https://www.facebook.com/reel/749162660538279

Got the usual "Bet its an EV hur hur"

Well it was an electrical fire, but the car runs (or rather ran) on diesel.

I have seen a lot of cars on fire in my time, well a fair few, but never an EV so far.

An interesting study I saw, a lease company has had no EV fires,

https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/tusker-fleet-data...

This is the main take away, I appreciate that EV fires can be trickier to extinguish but these figures dont specify if its a battery fire, its low odds anyway, and some will be down to arson, smoking and whatever reasons, battery fires are thankfully rare (Or should that be very well done ?)

"With data corroborated from a US insurer, the study found that EVs suffer 25 fires per 100,000 sold.

Petrol or diesel vehicles were found to experience 1,530 fires per 100,000, with hybrid vehicles at a notably higher risk of 3,475 fires per 100,000."

I always caveat it that I dont own, or currently aspire to an EV but I do prefer it when people dont trot out old information or lazy Clarkson-isms like its gospel.

Your Moto? You have your own motorway service station?

Is that for charging your two battery cars?!

Seems my car has the older more powerful battery so that's going to make it even harder to upgrade to a slower car.

Anyway I'm still drooling over the sheer quality of the interior and aching to own one.

Hopefully you bought something with an ICE engine worth enjoying and not the Audi TT you were asking about.
