RE: Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo | Spotted
Discussion
Had mine 20yrs this year...had a GTV V6 too it's Sister..until 2yrs ago...the Coupe remained..it is my everyday car 1000miles pa. What a car....still fast...looks amazing in Sprint Blu and unlike anything on the road today...sounds absolutely delicious too..mine is in the Pistonheads Hero archives...a keeper for sure.
Lovely thing and has aged nicely. Wasn’t this Broom Yellow? Had it one of my other Fiats and it such a nice shade especially when the sun hits it.
MOT thing is weird. Could have some structural rot underneath. Older Fiats and Alfas can look surprisingly fresh on the outside and hide an absolute mess underneath that could catch out the unwary but it could also be the dealer selling it as ‘spares or repair’ to cover himself from dreamers who think they’re getting a brand new car but too good to shove in the auction.
It’s a car that requires a certain outlook to own. It will need constant fettling to keep it in A1 condition and if an occasional warning light scares you then it’s not for you.

Contemporary affordable coupes you could buy new in the UK mid to late 90's? Hmmm
Alfa GTV
VW Corrado
Peugeot 406 Coupe
Hyundai Coupe
Megane Coupe
Integra
Probe
Calibra
Celica
Prelude
Audi TT
Rover 200
Now for the RWD...
200sx
MR2
Maybe a 3 series?

MX5 RC
...that's it
Seriously, one of these Fiats in 1999 would have been £22,855, or just over £42k in today's money. The above were the only two I could think of which are less than that. Please let me know if anyone knows of any others.

FWD was king as you say, so that probably explains why I went with the 200SX instead!
All joking aside...it was a brilliant time back then to be into cars I reckon, and I've always been a big fan of these too.

MUCH preferred the 2 x 20VT’s I had.

Miss mine a lot. Bit of a curate's egg but really loved the looks and performance and no problems at all in five years of ownership.
At least it's in good hands. Back on a private plate now, as it was with the first owner who traded it in for a 911. He had owned the Fiat for 16 years but didn't keep the 911 anywhere near as long.
also a good color for such.At least it's in good hands. Back on a private plate now, as it was with the first owner who traded it in for a 911. He had owned the Fiat for 16 years but didn't keep the 911 anywhere near as long.
I wasn't a fan of their looks back in the day but I think they look great now. Maybe having had some Bangle BMWs helps?
I remember Clarkson really liking his 20VT Coupe even compared to his Escort Cosworth!
But this £9K no MOT is a joke. Then again I'd much rather have the Red LE with leather in the link anyway.

If you're in the market for one of these there's a 16v for just over £5k that might be worth a look:

It's amazing how much difference the body coloured side skirts make on these. It looks awful without them bit with them it's a real beauty.
I had two of them, rubbish handling but sound great and are quick.
The 16V I'd say is arguably more fun as the boost is quite hilarious - very short punchy bursts whereas the 20V is much more linear like modern turbos.

Love these. Remember when they first came out I was at Brookmans for an auto Italia day and one tuning firm had got their one over 180mph and still pulling... Back then that was seriously fast.
The journey there was memorable for the way it gained speed.
I'm sure it wouldn't be that quick Vs modern hot hatches but back then it was really quite something.
Beautiful cars. One of my favourite cars ever.

If you say that, you're not a real driver > Try to make a FWD car work well for you and step into a new world. If they'd made a RHD version it would have been far more popular

I was never all that impressed with the handling, was better once I replaced the crap tyres it came on with Continentals, even so, even if the handling was ok my abiding memory was of the dreadful, slippy leather seats that didnt hold you in place, my mate had a black one with cloth seats which was much better.
The LE and Turbo Plus models have recaro sports seats which hold you in place.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
