Hmmm, if only VW had seen fit to cover the dirty bits of a Mk1 Golf GTi in a svelte, sexy, aerodynamic, coupe body. Now that would have been something.

Oh, hang on...

Mk.1 Scirocco, such an aesthetically pleasing shape.

I wasn't trying to wind you up... Nice, but prefer the 'purity' of line of the Mk.1.

Mmmm...had a J-reg Scirocco Mk2 once too - but the carb-fed GTII rather the GTI. Still, it was a fine-handling machine and the last time I had anything without PAS-corrupted steering.

And here it is....:

Shed a tear, for I fear it lives no more.

The fuss is because the Golf GTi created the hot hatch sector.

Without the GTi the concept of 'hot hatch' probably wouldn't exist!
You could say the first hot hatch was technically the Scimitar GTE?

I don't believe we wouldn't have the hot hatch if it wasn't for the Golf. It was inevitable someone would stick more powerful engines in the hatches that were being launched all over the shop. Love 'em though, used to doodle pictures of MK1 GTI's over my school books!

Oddly, there's a UK-plated Mk2 Scirocco right across the street where I live that I don't think has moved for as long as I live here (2.5 years). It's Mars red which has become flat red, the bumper has come off and is laying in front of the car and gras is growing under the car on the parking space it occupies. All in what's damn near central Rotterdam...

Well, assuming its tax has run out, I can't believe it's not been towed away and the keeper asked to stump up the £300, or whatever it is, to stop it from getting crushed! Bizarre.

No, it's parked in the street. Although I don't remember having seen it lately (haven't looked for it either), so someone might have towed it away...

The 2007 equivalent weighs nigh-on 1,400 kgs. Sure, it has 197 bhp to pull it along instead of 139,
Or 230bhp if it's an edition 30 or 305BHP if its had a simple chip upgrade at oettinger biggrin

Over 300 on a chip alone? I don't believe any OEM would overspecify turbo, injectors, possibly pistons, exhaust and intercooler system by that much for a 200 bhp car...

I sold a Mk2 Golf G60 Syncro about a year ago. Loved it - bought a Rallye to play with smile

The Rallye after some TLC! Not bad for an old car

Great cars. Not the best maybe but one of many on my list!

Edition 30 has a detuned Audi S3 motor with all the goodies inside and as standard came with 230bhp not 200 wink ..... http://www.oettinger.de/navi_e.php?motor_id=1051
