I will continue to subscribe, however do agree with the sentiment that they are getting a little big for their boots....

I am loving the limited edition covers however!!!

Hey look a "horses for courses" type thread.

Here's my tuppence:

EVO: great, my favourite read. I like to read about the drive and associated "adventure" as much as the car. Great writing and great pics.

Practical classics: Stymied by needing to pander the 'It's not a proper classic' crowd

PPC: likeable, as does what PC can't but chronic typos

Classic Cars: Buy occassionally dependent on cover stories

Classic and Sportscar: Can't live with the prose.

Any other mags: how many cubic feet of luggage space...

So there!

Im mildly irritated by continual hypercars but on balance find each issue always has some good stuff.

What do we think about the T350 buyers guide in this months issue?
Ive seen worse reviews although I cant say Ive seen any for sale at £16K.

IMHO the best evo issues recently have been the 10k heros and the front drivers tests. After that i increasingly switch off and cant even imagine buying most of the stuff they test. Im one of a number of people who wouldnt spend good money on an old car i want it to work whenever i get in. Why dont they print more articles about normal cars instead of the 2 columns after they have had a free trip to the south of france to hoon about for a day. EVO is a well written mag but also a magnet for corporate sponsors and big money playboys to show off their toys.

Sometimes I buy Auto Italia just to drift off into fantasy land.

I wish there was a technology magazine which was prepared to devote as much space to a single article as EVO does to a single car. Stuff and T3 are too much like mail-order catalogues. I want to know how things work.

The problem I have with it is the lazy journalism. They hardly ever do any digging to tell me about some interesting new cars. I'm still waiting for them to follow up on that 6 wheeled thing and the car that grew out of the old EB110 chassis - the edonis. To me it just seems to be and endless stream of reviews of cars which they get an invite to drive in a swanky location. I think they need to cover a few more of the interesting creations that used to appear in CCC.

Although I subscribe to EVO, they are just like every other magazine in one area. They fail to level the playing feild in car tests. Tyres is my pet-peeve but there are others. In their recent tyre test they demonstrated hugh differences between different tyres and yet they fail to mention the tyres in their reviews. They'll happily state that car A is 1 second faster over a lap than car B but car B might be on more economy/noise/wear/winter optimised tyres. Every car enhusiast experiments with tyres (including EVO staff in fast fleet) so the manufacture fitted tyre is only relvant for a small portion of a cars life. I first noticed this in about 2002 when my Leon Cupra was delivery on P6000 tyres and according to the mags couldn't lap a track as fast as a CTR on P-zeros.

Another similar problem is optional extras on review cars. They've driven the mini cooper S several times and have never mentioned whether their car had the optional sports suspension, LSD or ESP. They often mention things like 'this example seems more planted than the one we drove last year' but this might be easily explained by the options and that becomes a very useful piece of information for potential buyers.

I'll probably buy that issue when it lands in the bookshops here, but otherwise the ever lenghtening intervals between issues I have bought between 2002 and now is quite telling. Evo has become a soap opera in that you've last seen an episode a year ago and then you see a new one and seemingly nothing has changed. By now they must have covered every single f_ing Gallardo in the country in some way or another, for starters...

Just wait till the new Alpha 8C is launched. EVERY magazine will waste many-many pages reviewing it even though it has already sold out. What a waste of time.

EVO isn't a buyers guide. It's an indulgence. It makes you feel good to read it.

Yes - this is by far the most irritating thing about PPC - the grammar, typos and spelling are embarrassing at times. Come on guys, I know you're "hands on" types but you're supposed to be journalists too! How hard is it just to run a spellchecker!?

I suppose you could always forward the material to me for proofreading in exchange for a modest fee and a chance to drive some fun cars! biggrin

I want a magazine to fulfill two criteria. The first is exactly as you mention and that is why I subscribe. However there is a massive gap in the market that I and many other think they should have been covering in more detail and that is real-world cars that most people can afford and might actually be spec'ing. The do exactly this with their real-world buyers guides for older cars. Why don't they provide a similar level of detail for newer cars?

I understand some of the rants about EVO, but I can't believe you would cancel it. It is only £3.50 a month FFS!! Even if I only read 1 article a month and just flicked through the rest I still think it would be worth the money.

As it stands I enjoy the writing style that makes you feel as though your along for the ride, gives me a bit of respite from the mundane British roads/weather and I'm sure some of these articles have sparked many a european jaunt for a lot of PH'ers. I don't understand the long reports on cars they haven't driven though, I think a spec sheet and at the most a double page spread would suffice.

I don't mean to offend anyone with my justification of subscribing to EVO, but surely it's worth £3.50 a month!!

Total 911 has been really rather excellent for the last few months. They've taken on some new talent and I love everything he writes. Thoroughly recommended.
