They're pretty much the Jap equivalent of the Mk2 Escort really, in terms of handling and cult following over in Ireland just now ? Seen the prices they,re fetching ?
This STI/Celica thing sounds like a good idea, especially making both RWD and AWD versions - reasonably cheap/light RWD coupes are becoming increasingly rare, and basing it on a Subaru drivetrain saves Toyota the cost of developing new small longitudinal RWD platform. Obviously I'd prefer it to be built as a Subaru rather than a Toyota and run in WRC instead of the new Impreza hatch, which may also be a better option for selling them if Toyota are trying to focus on the safe/boring market.
ETA: Heres a marketing idea for them - Subaru can run the AWD version in rallying, Toyota can run the RWD version in circuit racing, or even drifting if they want to attract the yoofs.

One very well known local "MAX POWER" featured modifier........couldnt get past it in his MI-16 engined, 205.............and he tried and TRIED!
I would suggest he was either a crap driver, crap modifier, or wasn't trying. I've driven a properly set-up 205Mi-16 and acceleration-wise it'd leave my 'teg for dead! Any Celica shy of a well-tuned GT4 wouldn't stand a chance in a straight-line...havoc said:

A coupe with STi running gear?!?
Not original...Prodrive already thought it...but great idea!!!
Eh? You mean the P2? Which came after the P1? Which was based on the Type-R, which Subaru did first. Not original...Prodrive already thought it...but great idea!!!

I work for toyota and i've not heard anything of a car like this being built although it would be great to resurect the rally type cars that toyota built for the road, but i can't see it happening.
What i have herd is that team panasoinc have had a play with a few of the cars that toyota have built they are used for demos and events etc, and we can only hope that maybe one day they decide to put some into production.

OH DEAR DID I UPSET A SCOOBIE DRIVER. I SURPOSE YOU HAVE A BLUE ONE WITH LOTS N LOTS OF STICKERS ON IT SUCKING UP ALL OUR GOOD AIR. I AGREE WITH THE POINT OF USING TURBOS ON SMALL ENGINES AT THE MOMENT IS THE ONLY WAY OF GETTING MAX POWER. BUT MY POINT ON TOYOTAS VVTLI ENGINE IS SURELY THE WAY FORWARD AND 190 FROM A EVEN SMALLER STANDARD ENGINE N 200 PLUS WITH A TWEAK IM SORRY ITS YOU N YOUR TURBO THAT NEED TO GET BACK TO YOUR CAVE THATS IF YOU CAN AFFORD A CAVE AFTER ALL THEM FILL UPS N SERVICING
Hurry up Toyota n Subaru.
So if Toyota own Subaru, when can we expect to see a scooby powered Elise??
Now that would surely be a tool.
Powerful low centre of gravity running gear in a super lightweight sports car.
Excellent.
Porsche who!!!!
It would surely out GT3 the GT3 wouldnt it.
& Subaru are starting to pull their finger out in the performance diesel market too.
How long before Lotus could build a 60-80mpg sports car, who needs electrickery??

I dont know about the rest of the world but here in Australia the 'TRD' name has been revived. At first everyone got excited thinking we were finally going to be able to have local access to the full TRD range of aftermarket parts or that a new sports car was on the way...but alas no.What i have herd is that team panasoinc have had a play with a few of the cars that toyota have built they are used for demos and events etc, and we can only hope that maybe one day they decide to put some into production.
TRD here is basically the new name for the Sportivo range and is nothing more than a few shiny add ons to tick on the options list.
The only car that has really had any tweaks is the Aurion, the TRD version has a supercharger slapped on its V6 and it does make some damn impressive power and torque but unfortunalte they stuck with FWD and automatic only
Toyota did begin to make noises as though the TRD thing was going to be a bit like with the BMW Mini...you can option a range of proper performance parts from the factory but again that has not appeared.
I think we have seen the last of any performance Toyota's...their market is the people who want safe, reliable, economical white goods and they are successful at this to.
