Does one really buy a Jag to change gears oneself?
It's so unseemly isn't it.
Indeed

Just looked at your profile, nice car. That must surprise a few people.
Agree that's a lovely looking car!yes, bags of character.

Would'nt like the fuel bill though, not with today's pricesgrumpy.

Thanks guys. Yeah, it's a thirsty beast, nowhere near as bad as one of these V12's though! I don't commute in it and I have it on a limited mileage classic policy so it's relatively cheap to run. smile

I would love to own one of these one day, but unfortunately my lack of mechanical knowledge and fear of buying a dog will probably prevent it.

I reckon in another 5-10 yrs these will go the same way as E-Types and start to appreciate considerably.

My dad has one of the last XJS models (Celebration edition). Rear disks are outboard, it has a 4 litre straight six (vague sense of economy), much more modern dash, modern-ish build quality and anti-rust treatment. It's still a huge car with a tiny interior but it shrinks around you as you drive it as all good GT cars do.

My dad has a late 4 litre tucked up in the garage with 60k miles, and prior to that a 3.6 manual. Glorious cars with that lovely old interior. The later ones had outboard rear disc's and are far less prone to tin worm.
Straight 6's are not far off the standard 5.3he v12's in performance terms, but less refined. On the upside they are FAR easier to work on and much cheaper to run. Having said that.. one of the last 6.0's would be my choice.

Seems a little sketchy. Maybe its a bad picture, but the door card looks a different colour from the rest of the interior.

Also, "enthusiast owned"? Then why does it need TLC???

Cool car though!!!

I'd love one, though for £1000 is does sound like a recipe for disaster. Might be worth the risk though for that V12

It seems like an unfinished project, I guess it needs TLC to get it finished off. It looks like it might have been welded then undersealed. If the work that's already been done is decent then it'll be a better buy than an untouched one.

love the car, but what a well written article.
Very descriptive and the passion for the car really came through.
Good work Garlic.

Nothing says opulence more than a big old jag. Saw one earlier parked up near the university, and out of a carpark full of new BMW's, Mercs and the odd Evo the only car that drew the attention of everyone I was with was the jag.
Naturally...it's a rarity! few ever see it..coz they've all fallen apart years ago, so most have forgotten what it looks like, and like being reminded. 18 years old and less than 100K miles, it needs a restoration, after a careful owner. I'd give a grand...to get rid of it. I'd love an early 70's V12 tho, those with round lights, like the one Arthur Daley drove, but V12, a daimler.

Have to agree with the sentiments in the article. There is no cheaper way to 12 cylinders BUT if you get a bad one you may as well re-mortgage now. Thankfully, I bought an ex-Jersey car (very hard to find there - why have all that engine and nowhere to drive it!) and so far it's been reliable as clockwork (it did cost me 4K STG though...) I did my homework, talked to previous owners and each one said they were cheesed off after they sold it!

It starts first time every time and still gets smiles and nods from folks who "get" it (not generally your eco-warrier type).

I've had a full service (plugs/oils/filters) done and don't expect to see the garage man for another 6 months (famous last words?).

Service wasn't cheap but I think it's worth keeping her in tip-top condition (seeing as the rest of them seem to be rotting away!).

i have always been facinated by the menacing presence of series 1,2,3 xj6/12 's and always promised myself when i reached 21 and could get classic insurance i would get myself 1 my first port of call was a c reg xj12 in a sorry state it had 12 months ticket but god knows were from anyhow i paid £110
for it and drove it back from marlow lol and found it had no rear brakes and was peeing out brake fluid and to top it of the expansion tank started leaking out water as quick as i could put it in lol
i threw a couple of quid at it and got it roadworthy using second hand parts it still looked a dog but once inside all was forgotten lol it keept going for a year then i threw it away. not having satisfied myself i spotted a 1981 daimler sovereign 4.2 that was only £200 in the free adds and in the picture it looked clean but the advert said electrical problem so i just had to look anyway so i travelled all the way to gatwick to have a look and to my surprise it was actually not bad at all bodily wise and ended up buying it on a wim i managed to get it home to farnborough and it died from lack of battery power just as i pulled up outside, 1 new alternator later and some cleaned up earth points it was as good as new and it did me proud for over a year trouble free, then it came time to sell before it started to dissolve to badly and i sold it on e bay for £400
that was 4 years ago now and i dont think 1 week has passed by that i dont look out for xj6/12 or xjs's in the papers and ebay etc
my circumstances have now changed and my journey to work is now only 2 or 3 miles unless i get on the mountain bike so i dont think i can hold out much longer without 1 nuts

Funny that you should mention buying an old v12 jag and repairing it in the garage. I was only 11 years old when my parents banned me from owning a v12 jag and repairing it in our garage. Although my father has a soft spot as he worked on them a number of years ago. Beautiful cars these.

My dad's got one tucked away somewhere....on the down side, what always surprises me is the lack of leg room for the front passenger. You are quite low in the seat, but the leg room isn't long, so it feels like you need to look between your knees to see out of the windscreen.

It's got less miles than that one and I've been offered it pretty cheap, but they don't do a lot for me.

On the plus side, the fuel economy isn't as bad as I'd expected.

Anyone remember "The Saint" ? (not the one who used to do the sport with Greavsie) smile

Was'nt the car in The Saint a Volvo?
It was when Roger Moore was The Saint, but when Ian Ogilvy took over, he had an XJS.

Aah - the XJS... Always had a soft spot for these. I knew from the age of about 6 that I was obsessed with cars and this is one of the cars that confirmed it (this, KITT, the General Lee and Magnum's Ferrari smile)

A bloke in a pub down the road from where I lived had a light blue one with a spoiler on the back and I wanted that car so much! Lol! Not sure I would buy one now though for fear of losing all of my money...
