64 litres of petrol for £30!http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=21708805...
The swines! I was born 20 years too late..
You would have to stop at ever station if you only put £30 worth in these days..
When he was throwing all the 80's tat away I expected him to get rid of the horrible sheepskin coat thing he was wearing...so horrible.
Also...the 968 has the most powerful engine of it's type? Yeah, because no one else is silly enough to make a 3litre 4cylinder. doh.
"and we didn't really push the Porsche off the cliff" they would nowerdays!

No doubt about it, XJS is an amazing car, nothing like it on the road. The power of the V12, long bonnet, smooth ride, great........I have one, and its a nightmare. The running costs will kill you, all the fun oil leaks, odd noises at times and general feeling of "will it get me there". No idea why you would want a manual on the V12?
Don't fall for the "collectable worth lots in the future" line, all the mint ones already bring in big $'s, the cheap ones will take major cash to put right. Going to go out on a limb here, the newer straight 6 4.0 is a much better all rounder, just doesn't have the soul of the V12.

I had a 3.6 for many, many years - spent a lot on it: 4 litre engine, manual coversion, all sorts of things but it covered 300,000 miles all over Europe without missing a beat. Am not into cosseting cars - they either work or they're gone. I spent a lot maintaining it properly and on mods but nothing on repairs (except bit of body rot). Changed it for a 993 - I would go back to an XJS tomorrow, my wife wouldn't! The only car in my life I truly miss......
I love the XJS i was so close to buying one, a 6 litre xjrs, think i may still buy one someday, it was a tough choice between a jag XJS or a lotus excel, i went for the excel in the end, as i'm just as big a fan of lotus as i am of jaguars, as these were thr marque's/cars i lusted after in my youth.
And i think if you get the bug for something when young, it's pretty inevitable it will stay with you for life

A girl (!) turned up to one of my exams last year in an XJS. Cool, cool car.
I once saw a very cute young girl driving an MG MGF with the top down on a lovely summers day, I fell in love instantly.............My wife has always had a thing about an xjs but sorry they are just rusting money pits now. Saw one not so long ago around Oxford, a burgangy ESTATE!, can anybody help with any info?
Nearly bought a perfect example, and I mean perfect, for £ 4,000 last year. Thought long and hard about it, but couldn't contemplate bills of £ 000s whenever it went wrong. The engine bay looked too fragile by far. But the inside of the Jag was one of the best (or maybe most nostalgic) I have ever seen.
My Ford Capri (owned for 19 years now) is not much slower and is in as good a condition. Nothing has ever gone wrong with it. I'm no mechanic, but it's easy to maintain. You'd need Captain Kirk to sort out the Jag.
Which one would attract the most attention in a car park ? A perfect Capri 2.8 (E reg) or a V12 Jag. Okay, it would be the Jag. But why oh why does that engine bay look so complicated !!!
Has anyone out there replaced that fragile V12 with a more powerful and easy to maintain V8 ?

Thanks very much for that link! It reminded me of three things .... http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=21708805...
1. How little I enjoy TG now, compared to then.
2. How much Clarkson has changed - you can see he is now a parody of what he was like there.
3. How much I miss my old Mk2 Golf GTi - off to look at the classifieds!
Oli.

they were very rare protoypes/conversions called a LYNX...and yes xjs are pretty damn crap if you ask me... general rule is the earlier it is the worse it will be.
why do you think they are cheap? there IS a reason!
But everybody likes different things etc. just dont bring it to me...

My dad's got one tucked away somewhere....on the down side, what always surprises me is the lack of leg room for the front passenger. You are quite low in the seat, but the leg room isn't long, so it feels like you need to look between your knees to see out of the windscreen.
It's got less miles than that one and I've been offered it pretty cheap, but they don't do a lot for me.
On the plus side, the fuel economy isn't as bad as I'd expected.
Anyone remember "The Saint" ? (not the one who used to do the sport with Greavsie)
Was'nt the car in The Saint a Volvo? It's got less miles than that one and I've been offered it pretty cheap, but they don't do a lot for me.
