Similar feelings towards the fake Dodge Vipers you see occassionally.....having said that the Ferrari 365 Daytona Spider used in Miami Vice was actually a rebodied Corvette paperbag
Really?? Are you sure? Why would they do that?
'Cause they blew it up at some point in the show?

"It seems that in Italy just selling a Ferrari replica is actually against the law, whereas over here it is just a crime against style."

So has the shark-nose replica Chris Rea created for the film "La Passione" ever been to Italy?

Whilst I agree that the MR2 based cars are hideous, making it illegal does seem a little harsh. Surely the culprit is the person crazy enough to buy one. I don't understand the thought process which makes people go out and buy/build one of these, but having said that I am building a Locost so therefore could be accused of being just as guilty in terms of copying a design original.

Why did Miami Vice use a rebodied Ferrari? Because Vettes are expendable, or at least moreso than a Ferrari. How many Dodge Chargers do you think they went through filming the Dukes of Hazzard? There's a small industry keeping track of which car was a closeup car and which was used for action scenes. And of course there are fakeydos of those, too. Although I've seen everything from hearses to Minis made up with the Confederate flag on the roof and the big "01" on the doors.

But back to the fake Ferraris. There's a cottage industry in the U.S. turning out replica Ferrari, Lambo, etc, etc, kits for (mostly) Fieros, though those are becoming more rare. Some of the kits, too, are original designs, and you can imagine the gamut those run.

Carlisle has a show every year dedicated to the kit car industry and they say it's well attended. I went some time ago out of curiousity and saw, among other things, a Z3 nose kit for a Miata, and a plastic kit to make your Jeep Wrangler look like a pint-sized Hummer.

What I really liked, however, was an original creation by a body shop owner who grafted the heavily befinned tail of a '59 Cadillac onto the rear of a Miata (narrowed, of course). The fins came forward all the way to the A-pillar. Why did he do it? Because it was there, I suppose, and the looks people got on their faces when they realized what it was.

There is a guy in Watford who drives around in a fake 355 near the high street,(where else) who judging by the way he struts around and looks back at his car when he gets out must believe its the real thing.
I think its a bit like fake boobs, they are for people who wish for the real thing, look awful, and just wont handle the same!wobble

As was the white 'Testarossa' they used in later series, also a fake.

I wonder if Italian law makes exceptions for Re-creation/replica's of classic cars built using some autentic parts?
Ive seen some very convincing Maserati 450's and Ferrari TR's built using the engines from QP's and 365/400GT's. How about the Autocraft Daytona replica?
Are they also illegal in Italy, or only if they are hideous knock off's that look nothing like the real deal built on MR2's?
They are illegal.......but it's really strange, we have one of thr biggest counterfeit industry in the world, but concentrate only on 8 poor souls selling ferrari replicas......I don't care for them, but we do have bigger problems to tackle!

They should concentrate on the fashion industry instead, were billions of Euros are made yearly out of counterfeit goods.....but alais, Ferrari does make the news!!!!

If you get caught by the police buying a fake watch, bag or other, you could have a fine ranging from 3 to 10.000 Euros!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,....we still buy them, but we're a little more carefull......biggrin

Nope the show was popular by then so Ferrari supplied them they were white to show up better in sequences filmed at night.

Regarding the Chris Rea film did anyone see it ? any good ?

out of interest did they ever do a 348 replica on the mr2 or did they just go straight to Faux355?
Not sure, more than likely though, I found this recently on my travels....

288 GTO replica from a Lancia Monte Carlo! - why, why, why?
That... is... truly... awful!... Sacrilegious if you ask me.

This reminded me of the <ahem> Pontiac Fiero and an abortion of a 308 (or was it a 328... or even a 348?!) bodykit that could be bought for it. The suckers that are into this crap, have got to seriously grow up IMHO.

This article brings back 'memories' of a geezer whom I knew from school, who had a Countach replica... on a Beetle chassis!!! He didn't even have an engine <cough> upgrade! rofl The sad, small-minded, misguided t**t claimed that people at the side of the road would take photos of it as drove by. Allegedly. What a c**k.

Does anyone remember the infamous Top Gear viewer's car photo of a bright orange Vauxhall Vectra (I think) - with a giant, bold, black Helvetica-style "DODGE CHARGER" vinyl, brazenly slapped on the back! rofl The rubbishness!

Blimey! That rings a bell... It wasn't in Sevenoaks was it, as I remember a car exactly like that... Countach-bodied Beetle - check, no engine - check...

Very sad...

weeping The Monte is a cracking car to start with. Why the hell would anyone want to ruin it by turning it into a GTO? I like the GTO normally but trying to do something as heinous as that should be against the law.
Probably cos if it were anything like the montecarlo I used to have then after about five years of ownership there was very little bodywork left and using it as a donor was about the only way to preserve the cracking engine.

I think it was a 'common' conversion back in the 80's. This chap (and me) were from Braintree, Essex at the time...
