Many years ago I was driven round the Ring in R32 GT-R. Probably the best motoring experience I have ever had. The first few corners were a bit scarey since the drivers approach into the corners seemed a tad fast, but soon discovered that it had extraordinary cornering. Great car wish I could own one. Bit faster than my Renault 4.

I love the part of the article about the best R32 being the N1; just so happens that I have one sitting in my garage. Mine puts out max. 336hp to the ground..that has to be at least 400hp at the crank and it still has stock intake and exhaust. Can't image what it'll do with some mods.

Had mine for nearly 5 years now, longest I've ever owned a car. Will sell it at some point but I'm not really bored of 530bhp just yetbiggrin
Seeing as this thread has come back I'll update, sold the GTR in august 2008 and bought a Cerbera biggrin Only reason I sold it was I needed a change from a bland Japanese interior and the Cerb certainly ain't bland! thumbup

I have always liked the look of the R32 compared with the later models. Such a nice design.

I like these ph heroes stories but to add an extra element couldn't you go and find one and see what they're like to drive these days? The info reads well but often reads like a rehash of all the information we've read before.

Cheers,

Mark

Nice story.

I own a NISMO 400R (R33). She is very high mileage now but mine all the way.
Unburstable.
Unbeatable.
Unbearable and Unthinkable to part with.

I have owned (and still own) a selection of other performance cars, both historic and contemporary; some of which rarely see the light of day, and usually only on track. But as an all-round performance car which for everyday use, be it a trip to the supermarket or a three figure blast across Europe for a short-notice skiing invitation or camping in the hills around Monaco, there is simply nothing better.

And I mean nothing.

If Carlsberg built cars, they'd have built the Skyline.

Simply magnificent.

The End.

Stunning machine.

Do you have any pictures of her?

I ran an R34 GTR for a while. lovely car, fantastic straight 6 engine.

Would love to be back in a GTR again someday, if I did this one would be it. A standard R32 smile

Of course, I have many pictures of it, mostly on track - courtesy of generous photographers and usually in France, Germany or Switzerland. I hasten to add that it is an every day car and NOT a track car. It's just that I do that for a living and the opportunity to put this car on track where it wants to be is sometimes irresistible. (Done a rather respectable time around Nordschleife).

After some vandalism it has been repainted, deliberately covering its original identifying markings and stripes. However, the paint job is better than new being far darker and buff-polished with deep multi-lacquering (literally like dark glass). She looks like a very special R33 GT-R but I will not go into more detail. This makes her virtually unique and I am not willing to show her on the internet. Very sorry.

I own a number of other cars. But nothing makes me smile like going home to my baby. Whoever suggested that the Japanese cannot produce machines with character needs to try one. Actually, they probably only need to see one in the flesh. Any R33 GT-R has a subtlety that reaches some deep rooted instinct in the observer. This goes beyond my capacity for an explanation but if cars can be likened to people, this one is my true love and I cannot bear the thought of waving goodbye. I cannot bear to think of ever parting with her. Seriously. Furthermore, I am confident that her factory spec' NISMO engine will outlast me. In 50 years time this car will be seen as the very best used example on the planet.

P.S. I should have mentioned above that in all the 12 years I've had her, and all the very high mileage accumulated, nothing at all has ever gone wrong. I have not even replaced a single bulb!!! That includes all the crazy lap times she's achieved in various places around the world. This cannot be said for any other car I have ever owned; hence the enduring marriage! To put this into perspective, and in spite of the huge mileage, I would find it very very hard to sell; even for stupid money in a large briefcase. Perhaps foolish but yes, I'm that attached to this very item. I do not want to part. Ever.

Sorry no pic's.

…R32 is on of my top all time cars & deserves it's place next to a Lancia Delta Intergale, E30 M3, 205 1.9 GTI, Escort Cossie as a true Icon of monster performance from a non premium car maker.
In my opinion, your comparisons are generous.

I need to state here that I have not driven a standard R32, but when one considers a few other things - in addition to the performance, I doubt any of the alternatives you've mentioned can really approach the Nissan. I repeat: I say this from the backward looking perspective of R33 ownership. From my point of view and what I know of the changes between the models, the 205 resides on Pluto compared with the others; E30 is next and the Escort Cossie vies with the Integrale to go into any ring with Godz R32. *See bullet below.

I still don't have to think more than 5 seconds about the winner - and I'm not just talking pure performance.
R32 beats the Integrale on running costs, durability and every-day practicality. Escort Cossie is close to Integrale but is still 'just' a Ford. E30 is in no-man's-land and doesn't have enough of anything other than German pedigree. And 205 should be grateful it ever got a mention in this thread!

  • P.S. My understanding has always been that 'Godzilla' was a term applied to the R33 and not the smaller, lighter, less evolved R32.

To stop would-be thieves looking at it, I assume. I could be utterly wrong.
