I’m not arguing that the ‘Cossie’ is an iconic car but I, personally wouldn’t buy one even if I had the money. A quick search on PH Classifieds turned up the following, (given that an ’87 3 door is advertised for about £12k) : ’03 RS Focus; ’03 DC5 Integra,; ’03 Scooby; ‘01 Tommi Mak Evo. All of which are just as exciting, if not more so, than a Cossie. All with modern mod cons and more importantly aren’t Sierras! I’m sure there are plenty out there who will disagree but I thought I’ld put things into perspective.
True. £12k will buy you a share and bunch of flights in a supersonic fighter jet or unlimited aerobatics aircraft, both of which make any car (or bike for that matter) feel as exciting as a a wet fart. All horses for courses. Difference between the cars you mention is the Cossie came first. It was a mold breaker. Focus RS is good but it's no Cossie. Evo Mak - great A to B but appalling on track (been there, done it, got the t-shirt and P-Zeros down to canvas), similar case for Scoobies. There's a car to suit everyone and you're quite right to put it in perspective but it's a bit like saying a Countach is st because it's no faster than a modern 5 series beemer. Put in in the context of it's day and it was staggering. Same for the Cossie.
If you don't "get" the Sierra Cosworths, you probably don't "get" cars like the E30 M3, Integrale, original Quattro either. There's plenty of faster hatches/4wd cars around these days for less/same money with more mod cons

I remember when I tried to get quotes in about 94, rang one broker and he said he wasn't taking any more Cosworth business on - 202 cars on his books and had had claims on about 190 of them!

Mine's a sapphire 2wd; most fun car I've ever driven. Nothing like 80's turbo lag to make a car seem even faster than it is. Easy to get plenty of power out of a cosworth lump too - mines running ~380 bhp these days,

Mate had an XR4i years back, that was pretty sweet even though it was only packing around 150bhp, one of these would be heavenly!

What sort of weight are they dragging around? 200bhp in one of those is surely more effective than 200bhp in a lardy scooby?
Just done a quick google and it seems they are around the 1200kg mark.
Thats still quite heavy considering

That is one lovely looking car. And stonkingly quick too! There is an immaculate one that has been for sale in a dealer near here for ages now, in the back of the showroom, in white. So tempting!

Just to add to the other replies to this comment, the unique selling point (as I see it) of the Cossie today is that, unlike all the other cars you mention, it's not depreciating in value & possibly now never will.

The man speaks sense yes

Personally, I don't 'get' Nobles, Exiges and the like, but I've yet to venture onto the respective forums and wax lyrical about how 'crap' they are.

What 4-seater saloons of that time are much lighter out of interest?

Considering what?
The Fiesta ST150 weighs 1137kg
The current Mini Cooper S weighs 1205 kg
The Lotus Carlton weighed 1650kg

Exactly, my slightly smaller E36 328i weighs 220 kg more than my Sapphire (1220kg). Sierras of that time don't have all the impact protection, etc of later saloon cars so they're not at all "heavy considering"

Can't say I've bought one on the strength of this....but last time I took it to be MOT'd the tester at the garage was deadly keen on buying my 4-door version

Hello fellas.
I've just read through these threads with great intrest.I've owned my cossie now for 12 years, just put it back on the road after being stuck in a garage for 6 years. I'ts had a full respray and i've fitted all sorts of new parts etc to get it running again, which i'm pleased to say has happened. I've had a couple of Audi's recently and a Porsche Boxster but the Cossie is definetly the best one to drive, i't is fantastic and turns heads everywhere, even more so the the Boxster. Insurance was a nightmare when i first got it at 22, but now it's around £200 quid on a classic policy, result!!
Cheers.
