People on here seem to be obsessed with how many "heads they can turn" when they drive, are a lot of people here really that sad that they get a buzz when someone they dont know looks at them when they drive a car? I know Corsa driving chavs love to have people look at them, hence big exhausts etc, so people can go "what a tw4t" as they drive past (of course, they think people are going "isnt he cool" ), but I cant see the appeal to have people look at you, unless you are very short of attention in life.

As far as Ford Cosworths are concerned, I never got them. I dont think they look nice and look like something a chav with a crayon might draw as they repeate a school year, nothing classy or beautiful about them at all (although beauty is in the eye of the beholder).

Im sure they drive fast, but you're sat in a old Ford, with rubbish dash and interior, so who cares if it goes fast, it's not like you get to sit somewhere you'll enjoy the ride.

Im one of the few I suppose, not the car for me at all.

Hmmm, by that logic a Caterham isn't much fun to drive either???

Ford themselves toned the looks down by using the remainder of the 2wd boxes and engines in the 4-door shell - same performance but less obvious

I don't think even I could describe a 3dr or RS500 as beautiful or classy. Unfortunately the fact they got nicked a lot (by chavs) and many were driven by dealers and robbers to escape the cops which didn't help. I think purposeful is as complementary as I could get. For me it's what the cars represent and in the case of the RS500, that is an absolute zero-compromise assualt on the World Touring Car Championship. It's as much a homologation special as an S1 quattro, Twin Plenum SD1 Rover and these days, just as rare. Some compare it to the E30 M3, but BMW built 18,000 of those, not 500 (They built the E30 M3 much better, admittedly). Remember, the aero kit is 100% functional. Not just a tacked on spoiler because it "looks sporty". It's still one of the few road cars that generates any significant positive downforce at speed. Most aero kits simply negate lift, IIRC the RS500 kit generates something like 150kg at 100mph.

What...? If you want a nice interior and an enjoyable ride, buy a Maybach 63 and a driver...! This is Pistonheads for goodness sake...! I had a blast in a Caterham R500. It was bloody uncomfortable on UK roads, spartan to say the least and the "dash" (I use the term loosely) was hardly luxurious, more functional. Just. The car was a nightmare to drive slowly but when you started to open it up and got some fluidity from the road the car was amazing. Who cares though, must be rubbish coz it's got a crap dash...? confused

That said, rubbish dash could not be more accurate. It's very poor compared to modern cars for sure...! Doesn't fall apart though and mine is surprisingly free from rattles for a car whose 21st birthday is approaching. Interior doesn't live up to a lot either (but we are talking early 80's repmobile here). It's pretty bland and well, like an old Ford...! The seats are some of the best, if not the best I have ever sat in, although again, this is Pistonheads - traditionally it's about the way a car goes that counts. Regards the ride as a passenger, possibly not that enjoyable but there's none of the banging and crashing over bad roads you get with today's over wheeled and under-tyred cars. The driving experience is something to behold though. Absolute feedback from the road, the ability to drive by the seat of your pants, feeling all of the nuances of the surface and the dynamics of the chassis being fed back to you. It's not as adjustable on the limit as an E30 M3 mainly due to it's "on/off" turbo power. That power though, my god when you open the taps the old-school laggy boost explosion is like nothing else. Get a well set up car and I defy you not to enjoy the drive. Besides, when you're in it, you can't see the outside...!!!

I'm not about to try and convert the unconvertable - it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea for sure. The fact that when it was released it was like nothing else and can still today hold it's own with modern quick cars is testament to just how right Ford got it (for the most part).

Agreed, the Recaros really are comfy - can do ( and have done ) 600/700 miles in a day and get out with no aches

Vagabond,
I'm certainly not obsessed with "turning heads" or attention as you say. I'ts merely a turn of phrase and a testament to these cars to show that people are still interested in them, even after 20 years. Not even in the same league as some chav's Corsa, despite what you might think.

I think there'd be very few few cars that people on here would lust after that didn't draw some sort of attention, wanted or unwanted, be it Cosworth, Porsche, Ferrari, Lancia, Audi RS etc....

yes Sadly. The only paint my car has ever had is a touch up under the door lock where some pikey tried to rob it many moons ago. Baseball bat wielding owner saw them off before they got in though.

Rather than counting how many RS Cosworths have been robbed, it's quicker to count how many haven't...

Very true, esp in the early 90s

Used to have a grey 2wd Sapphire Cossie. Unfortunately it got wrapped round lampost one frosty Saturday morning on the way to the footie. Have had a string of much more powerful sports cars since then but I still miss the Cossie. frown

I know what PH means when he says its a bit of a 'local' hero. I went all round the country in it and it used to get respect everywhere. Not sure what it is about the Cosworth cars. They make you go all googly inside when you drive around in them. Maybe its because of the respect you get from many fellow petrolheads. You know that secretly there's a part of them that wants one! smile

Yep, they can bite back quick when it's a bit slippery - always a bit more "edgy" than the M3 they were often compared with

Great old cars!

and any excuse to get some pics up

my favourite's were the Saphire 4x4; still a performance bargain now, £5k gets you 300 bhp with loads of character.

The 4x4's were more composed than the 2wd models (once tuned) and I never really liked the Escort Cos, nasty inside.. (luckily had an EVO 8 MR at the same time and the Escort always felt a bit old and lame, even with 330 BBR bhp to make it go it had so much lag it was miles behind)....

Nice collection there.
Quite interesting how many people have gone to a newer Jap Rally rep.....and then gone back to the old Fords. Although not as capable as the newer cars they do have character like you say

BBR Tuned White D reg 3 Door, best car ive ever owned, it was a fantastic track day car back then, totaly outragous £1,760 fully comp to ins (standard car) back in 89 and no one would insure you if you didnt have Vectra imob fitted(another £500). The only car ive ever owned that on the motorway people just pulled over out the way!! Unlike my 3.2 carrera your Granny could drive it and look good it was easy and brisk to drive. Shame the resesion hit in late eightes God knows how many ended up being broken up for parts and cars claimed as stolen, nobody could sell them the yearly ins in some cases were as much as the car. After reading your artical think its time for a change in my classic motoring no more 911s i think a white 500 next time!

What a tcensoredt you are. You really are on the wrong site, you should be a member of smug-git.com. This site is ALL about how fast it goes, hence the slogan.

By the way, have you seen the dash of a Lamborghini Muira SV or a Westfield Megabusa for that matter?

Oi! That's a bit on the nose there, don't you think?? rolleyes

I remember my headmaster having one of these back in primary school and we all used to crowd around it in the car park and lust. That, of course, was before we discovered badge snobbery but even to this day it does touch a soft spot.
