Hasn't anyone else noticed that that grille is a different shape to the one on the photoshop? It is obviously not from that car.

I don't generally have a problem with them, although they're not particularly on my radar so I don't study them hard. They tend to have merged with everything else on the road for me.
Probably because they are so common now (even though everyone seems to hate the 'bangle' style, it doesn't seem to stop them from buying one) and also because many other makes have nicked BMWs style cues so they become familiar. Hence BMW going ever more outlandish in design to try and stand out. This means you end up with the current situation where BMW launch a new model with some pretty out there styling, the naturally conservative public recoil in horror, then everyone else copies it, then later people criticise BMW for being too bland!

BMW could have stuck with the direction they were going in, minor incremental changes. That is basically what Aston Martin and Porsche have done and yet plenty of people tear them apart from being too boring and always having the same design, even if it was a pretty good one to start with. You cannot win either way you go!

Although it's probably seen as something of a dream job, I reckon it must actually really suck to be a car designer. Imagine you spend ages perfecting a new design, only for the engineers to fiddle around with it so it actually works, then the beancounters chop out the interesting parts so it's cost effective to make, the safety regulations then ruin the lines, then when it's launched, everyone criticises it for either being too boring or too ugly or copying someone else. I reckon you'd have to have pretty thick skin or a mammoth ego to handle that job without suffering severe depression.

I would have thought they would just evolve the Bangle design, as the current 7 was the 'reset' switch for the BMW range. After decades of evolution they almost started again in the styling dept, and this will just be one of BMWs ultra-facelifts...

I think the job changes, much like a techie job. Initially you are interested for technology sake, but later on the interest comes in working through the process with people who are trying to dilute what you do for other reasons.

I guess it's similar to a techie job, you initially get into it for techs sake, but over time you get naturally more involved in the process of making it agreable to all the other stakeholders not just your own tech paradise.

Although if anyone can find me a job where i can get back to the techie stuff for the same benefits and seniority I'd jump at it !!

That's basically what happened;

Look at how similar the EK Civic Coupe and the E46 3er Coupe ended up being; everyone was honing in on BMW.

Unfortunately, Bangle's designs had too much US-influence (ugly full-width front & rear panels, oversized wheelarches and unresolved lines) and looked very immature in some areas. Yet the 7er's roof arch was very elegant.

Hopefully the next genreation will settle down a bit.

As to the guy posting a discarded F01 bumper clip (it's likely from a prototype, so it may not be a finalised one); very funny indeed.

Guy I knew was called out of the office urgently, so posted a freshly-made cup of tea on Ebay. He got a few bids!

The side profile and rear is much better. I must admit I'm a bit pissed off with the shape of the kidneys, they're too round and big. More angular ones like this would suit it really well IMO.

This was such a good looking car in its day!
