Has anyone got a spare van and lots of spare time to follow this van around and park immediately behind it wherever it goes?

More marked Police cars on the road would surely be a beter and more effective solution to the so called problem of speed kills.

It seems so rare that you actually see a Police car these days. If you see them frequently, it would have the same effect as I think they are trying to get with the unmarked van. Your not sure if ones is just round the corner etc etc. But it doesn't give the impression of being underhanded. The copper can 'educate' bad drivers, the van can't and it may also improve response times as well.

When the funding for partnerships changed, so did their obligation to meet certain requirements in terms of placing the mobile units and their visibility.

The police don't get the money. How many times do people need telling this? It's a case of people simply believing this is the way road safety should be conducted. If they wanted money they'd surely tip the resources into the 'proceeds of crime act' where they keep a fair whack of the money recovered.

I've often wondered about the legality of this too - could I park my car in their way and walk off without being fined or something?

I'd imagine they would quote 'preventing or obstructing an officer in fulfillment of duty' or some such?

Is it illegal to paint a big speed camera sign on the back of your own van?

One of these parked a few hundred feet behind the builders' van would work wonders.
And I'm sure the Police would be pleased because it would mean everyone would slow down and therefore be safer! angel

Im ready to open the whole can of worms here and wait your responses, as soon as I have posted this I may log off!

This conversation has been had billions of times before on here, I have had 12 points on my license over a period of years now, got 6 at the moment, I got them for speeding, because I was speeding, I was over the speed limit in an area where I shouldnt be, I deserved those points no matter how annoying they are, I deserve them because I was speeding.

If you dont speed, then cameras in police vans, in blue vans in disguise, held by policeman in glow in the dark jackets or by tramps, or camouflaged ice cream vans or Bill Oddie dressed as a green woodpecker will not affect you...

I DO agree that some of the speed limits are stupid in certain areas, but I also agree that some drivers are c*cks in certain areas, around schools or built up areas, and these are the drivers that havent got children of their own trying to cross roads in these areas... I await the bitter responses!

I was under the impression that the speed detection equipment being used these days could detect a speeder well before they could react to the sight of the vehicle.
Have you never seen one of these vans on your travels then coincidentally flashed motorists coming the other way?
I know it happens a lot up this way, not that I would condone such an action, of course.laugh

I was thinking the very same thing. I thought the law said that all speed cameras must be painted bright yellow and have significant warning signs in advance. The police are just like the bloody politians now...

On bits of road which are 'dangerous' (i.e. high casualty rate) I would far rather see more of the speed-sensitive illuminated signs warning of junctions etc. These are actually useful, especially if you don't know the road. On the A420 there is a junction, with a camera placed immediately after the junction. Surely a warning sign *before* the junction would be a far better idea...

I absolutely love the response to this question:

From the Derbyshire Speed Camera Partnership FAQ website:

Are the public given warning of where safety cameras are located?
Safety cameras are operated simply to slow motorists down and reduce the risk of a casualty, not to prosecute people.
How does that answer the question that was asked?

To the poster who has been affected by a speeding motorist causing an accident:

I have been affected by a NON speeding motorist causing an accident. Our local council stats show that only 2% of incidents are caused by excessive speed. Therefore there is far more chance of being involved in an incident caused by driver error, poor road condition etc than mere speeding.

In my case, the council just seem to want to cut limits and build speed bumps instead of fixing the problems with the roads decaying, there being inappropriate signage and poor, but improvable, visibility at junctions. So we fix 2% of the problem with 80% of the money, we get a 2% reduction in KSI stats and people are, for some reason, pleased with the result. (The other 20% goes for building bus lanes hehe )

So why the disproportionately large emphasis on enforcing speed?

Simple - it's easy to measure, and "bad driving" in all it's various guises is not. And while the fines do go to central government, the performance related pay DOES NOT - it makes the SC partnerships and the local police force look good for the government stats. This means more money to run the force and better pay reviews for the officers. A no-brainer given the current economic climate. wink

A similar effect can be observed in schools with league tables, tests etc. It all follows game theory very well - we end up caught in the law of unintended consequence. frown

How does that answer the question that was asked?
It did carry on afterwards, but I left that bit off. Cinically? Perhaps I should work for the Police.

Are the public given warning of where safety cameras are located?
Safety cameras are operated simply to slow motorists down and reduce the risk of a casualty, not to prosecute people. Therefore, we actively announce the locations of our safety cameras in the hope that motorists will slow down voluntarily.

Full details lie (sic) here:
