RE: My First Car
Discussion
Also first car was a Metro PHer here. Was a dark burgundy with the lovely velour beige seats.
Reg was E131 SNG if it's still running (doubt it, was sold in Norwich Auctions in 1998 for £30)....
Previous metro to that was my parent's, beige as some of you had also, reg was MGM 495X But really doubt that is still in circulation!

Good writing!
I also had a Metro as my first car.
A Silver (How Modern) A reg 1.3 MG Metro beast complete with red seatbelts, pepperpot alloys and obligatory vinyl roof to cover the rust.
Although the car had sporty pretension I never revved it past 4500 revs as the engine sounded like it was about to blow! Handling was go-car like and quite good fun, and the car was always reliable.
Memorable journeys such as my first foray onto the motorway network, the M23 to be precise, sitting there with a friend at a comfy 60 or so when "BANG", "What the hell was that?" "No idea." siad my friend. It wasn't t'ill we got home and out of the car that we realised the front bumper had simply come off and we had driven over it!!
I wrote it off when I came round a corner four up and hit a speed bump which was not there a week or two earlier. The rear suspension had collapsed and gone through itself. The back of the car was 3 inches off the ground, made it home in second gear buckarooing all over the place, good job plod did not see me!!
Sold it for £50, and then saw it 2 years later driving past me in Norbury!!
Ahhh, those were the days.....

My Grandmother bought one of these brand new in 1980 I think
KAM 656X
A snot green Mini-Metro 1.0 3dr
She finally traded it in in 1992 for a Ford Fiesta!!
I don't recall it ever giving her problems and it was mint when she got rid of it - what a terrible car though!!
My best mate bought a Vanden Plas version when we were about 18, it was so rusty it wasn't true, but Tony Pond impressions were undertaken alkmost daily until 2 old dears pulled out of a field into the side of it. Bye bye Metro.

Had a black MG Metro (EHP 93Y) when I was 19. Think it was my 4th or 5th car but was changing them more often than my pants back then!
Hated it when the hyrolastic suspension went and nearly bankrupted me but otherwise absolutely loved it.
Pepperpot alloys, red stripes on the body work, sports seats with red belts, leather steering wheel with a BIG MG slapped in the middle plus a great Saisho stereo bought with weeks of savings from my Saturday job at Dixons.

The first pizza delivery car that I used was a Metrot & I must say it was an absolute horror. It had a hell of a drink problem for a 1l (?) engine, broke down regularly and I eventually refused to drive it as it was downright dangerous (especially in the wet). The AX he replaced it with was civilised in comparison.
I might be prejudiced though by the one my brother had as his first car which had a habit of dumping the contents of the wet roof through the sunroof seals onto my lap when he went round a corner ;-)

A mate of mine in a total moment of madness decided to lower his Metro GTa, by letting all the fluid out of the hydrogas suspension system.
Slammed to the deck, by god it was uncomfortable. Still took it to the Chelsea Cruise we thought we looked cool, we didn't we looked like tits. Stopping at every petrol station for fuel, lucozade and ibuprofen.
Driving up the M1 we were tempted to push in a ditch and hitch the rest of the way as my spine was starting to call me names as we went over the concrete section by Brentcross.
We didn't though as it was starting to rain and we had all too much iboprofen and lucozade and were beginning to see things so we pushed on home and got the system pumped up next day.
Fun.

I guess it would have helped if my Samba had ever been serviced in order to get anywhere near 45 'chevals', plus you had the benefit of going to a rally school!.
Plural of cheval is chevaux (with a silent 'x') hope that comes in handy one day!Brilliant write up had me chuckling, then again Riots write up above is also most amusing, the things we did as kids.
My first car was a mini, bought an MG metro to build in to the mini, decided the metro was too good to scrap. 2 knackered BL specials on back garden......Mother not happy.
Decided to scrap Metro, sold parts for far more than paid for car (sad thing is didn't sell engine and G/Box which were brand new NOS never been run, ended up scrapping them a few years later, they would have been worth good money now).
Took mini for an "unofficial" driving lesson (live in a little farming village). Decided FWD wasn't for me having grown up around RWD cars and a father who restored classic and supercars.
Sold mini to friend at vast profit only snag being I had to spray it a manky metallic blue for him (without laquer can you imagine the finish!!).
Bought 1972 MG midget 1275 RWA, never looked back, RLG 105L, smashed it up so many times it was untrue, first was in to a ditch, then a couple of cars, then a bike hit me, an mg metro hit me, then I reversed in to a sapling (bloody strong sapling), then tried to do a handbrake turn and hit a curb down a little back road breaking the steering rack. When I sold it it had been through no less than 3 front ends (one a frogeye front due to lack of funds) the back end and front ends were pointing in different directions, and it was thoroughly clapped out! A 205 cabrio replaced it for a while, that car still holds worse handling car I have ever driven award, and eventually a pair of BGTs and then a Porsche 924 took over and my driving improved massively, I now compete in motorsport, drive some very quick cars (safely at last), restore classics instead of killing them.......But will always remember that midget.
Incidentally I challenge anyone to beat 5 adults in a midget

Yep my first car was a Bright Yellow W-Reg Mini-Metro back in 88. Black Vinyl seats were a joy! I realy wanted a Mini and the A-series bug never went away resulting in my prize possession of a Mk1 970s FIA spec Rally car and a Mini Estate which I still have - blame it all on that metro!!!

After 10 years of ownership - I got my lisence at 31! - I still own my 1.3 Civic G5.
We had quite a few adventures, but hey: hardly a car to write about.
Almost crashed it yesterday though, missed a tree because my guardian angel moved it an inch.

Last 12 months: new rear dampers and shocks and a dent up front. Hammerrite is my friend.
