It's amazing the number of 3 series you see about with M/M3 badges on them, just wait 'til you hear those 4 cylinders roar though!
We've been over this. the M badge designates the M Division of BMW. Any M Sport BMW will have at least 7 M badges on the car - on the kick plates, steering wheel, etc. By putting an M badge on a 3 series, you are not trying to make your car look like an M3 you are acknowledging M division.
Personally, i think sticking one of those badges on the back is now (quite) a bit passe, but i dont look at an M badged 320d and think oh hes trying to make it look like an m3.

I saw a diesel RS4 the other day. At least, I assume it was a diesel with its downturned exhausts belching out black smoke.
Yup, smoked one of those 1.9tdi powered Audi S4's myself the other day. They seem to be getting more and more common Nothing wrong with having a standard BMW with M parts on it (wheels, sills, steering wheel etc) but as far as I only the proper M cars come from the showroom with an //M badge on the bootlid. Fitting one yourself, regardless of whether it has a number next to it or not, is IMHO
People who don't know what the //M is for won't care, people who do will just think you're a plonker

Oh dear.....another Moron
there is a guy in Torquay with a (new shape) 5 series touring with an M badge on it....I just laugh every time I see it
Why? If it's an M Sport then whats wrong with the badge?there is a guy in Torquay with a (new shape) 5 series touring with an M badge on it....I just laugh every time I see it
Look at this badge on my car - this is standard fit from the factory on every single Sport model:
Whats the difference? If he had M5 on the back of his 5 Series Estate fair enough, but he doesn't. It's no different to deciding you wish to have 'SE' on the back of your car. Some people might think its a bit pointless but at least he's not trying to make it something it isn't, is he?

I think there are some people out there that cant grasp that 'M' refers to M Division NOT to M3, M5, M6. Ironically, they then think people who use the M badge are a bit thick.

Well it used to refer to BMW M GmBH, the company that prepped the racecars. However, regardless of the dilution of the logo it is a fact that no non-M cars (that's proper M3, M5, M6...) come out of the factory with an M-badge on the rear. In fact the only car with an ///M logo and no model type on the back is the Z4M, which has a bog standard ///M logo.

Wrong - E30 325i Sport.carl_w said:

Wrong again - Z3M Roadster and Coupe also had just the M logo on the back.M hasn't stood for simply the M cars since about 1985. Infact the M535i, a regular model with some M tat on it and a funky diff, predates BOTH the original M3 AND the original M5.

Sorry I meant current, although Z4Ms just went out of production. I was aware of the Z3 Ms just having the ///M badge, but not the E30 325i Sport.Fox- said:

But at least it had something mechanical, unlike the current 'M-Sport' range (and I have now been the owner of both a 320Cd 'M-Sport' and a 520d 'M-Sport')Edited by carl_w on Sunday 31st August 00:29
