Can we have a thread where we take the **** out of people in Fords for having a badge on the back saying '1.6' or something? It's pretty much the same thing.

If people have a problem with a dilution of the M brand (And an ignorance of BMW history to go with it, giving M branded normal cars predated the first proper M cars bar the M1) then I suggest they take it up with BMW themselves rather than taking grainy camera phone pictures of 118d M Sports.

Personally I see the M and M Sport as completely different things like I do with Audi's S line an RS models and think it is stupid to badge an M sport as an M and Audi S lines as an RS model I do know they is an association I just find it annoying when people do it as I get the feeling some of them believe it will trick people into thinking they have the real deal.

Whats with the link to the bmw.com site?
Maybe it's to play "spot the M badges". The exterior shot is too low-res, but you should spot one on each wheel (=4)
Plus in the interior 1 on the steering wheel and 1 on the gearstick (=6 running total)
Plus never apparent from the pictures the kickplates too, which I guess on a 5-series means 4 (=10 running total). TBH I've got a 5-series M-sport but never bothered to check if all four kickplates have the M-logo.
Don't think there's one in the instrument cluster, unlike my Z4MC which ironically has less M logos

Really? Heres a handful at random

When referring to the original post of a 3 series with an M badge.

That badge just doesn't look like BMW put it there (which is where the humour comes from)..would BMW really dilute the M5/M3 models by allowing M Sports to wear an M badge?
They do. Here are to photographs of my 5 Series Sport. There isn't a single halfords sourced M badge in sight:

And hang on, whats this completely standard non M3?

A genuine 325i Sport, with factory fitted M grille badge. From the 1980's. It's not even a new thing, BMW have been doing this for YEARS.

Many BMW's also have ///M rubbing strips on the side of the car - 328i Sport, 528i Sport, 540i Sport, etc etc - all factory fit.

When an owner buys a car from BMW themselves with all these badges on it as standard is it really the end of the world if they personally decide to complete the look with a simple one on the rear? I mean sure, its not to most peoples personal taste but it's hardly worthy of some of the uninformed vitriol in this thread, is it?

How does putting an M next to your 525d badge 'trick' people into thinking its an M5? Most of the cars people are sgging off are still badged up as whatever they are - be it a 525d or a 330i or whatever?

My personal favourite, from someone who drives an MG ZR, ie, quite possibly the worst victim of mis badging of all time...

Sorry I dont think I explained my self I mean when they remove the 525d badge and then simply replace with one that says M5. The worst example are the M5 replicas based on 525d's I saw one and was going to take picture as like M5's and it did look identical however owner walked up and started and I just burst out laughing. Although saying that have been in proper V10 M5 and when started did seem to sound like diesel although once dad's old boss put foot down this soon went and changed into a V10 bellowsmile

Oh I completely agree with - passing it off as something it's not and badging it M3 or M5 is indeed ridiculous and well deserving of ridicule. Thing is, most of the cars people have posted in this thread to rip the piss out of are not doing this. They've just stuck the model badge on the back of their car rather than simply left it on the wheels, sills, gearstick etc. Oh dear, crime of the century. Call the internet police.

Ahhh yes the MG ZR I not a particular fan of a fellow sixth former who owns one so say quite loudly rover 214i to him everytime I see him get in although he does seem to be getting quite angered by this. I was concidering putting a 214i badge on the back whilst he was not looking as seeing how long it took him to notice lolsmile

Oh agree with you entirely if it is a 318i with an M logo next to it hardly trying to be passed of as something else.smile

Worst BMW I saw, was actually an Alpina, but not.

Well, it was a B12 Alpina, with all the bodykit, stripes, exhausts, the lot, but it wasn't very fast, and upon checking the VRM on the RAC webby check thing, it was a BMW 728i...

How naff is that? I thought I'd seen one of maybe only 5 B12's, and it was a fake frown

Unless its an M car, BMW don't put the GRILL or BOOTLID badges on 'sport' versions, and I believe they never have done (certainly not since the mid 90s).

ps. That's a very clean E39 you have there !

My M3 will shortly be wearing a 318is badge, just for a laugh.

And I FULLY expect that to be the start of a thread entitled "Yeah it's a 318is mate", where I will be slated for passing my car off as the mediocrity of the E36 range.

Ah but they have - they did on the 1988 325i Sport, of which the car I posted is one. They also did it on the front of the M535i as well as on the rear.
