Who has the best Garage on Pistonheads?
Discussion
Finally getting in on this topic. Not the best garage by a long shot but unless I win the lotto or sell my business it’s as good as it’s going to get for now.
Garage at my first house, just a single with no space to move.
When moving house having the double garage I always wanted was a must. This is how it was on the day we moved in.
Few months later, having decorated the main living spaces in the house first we got around to doing the garage

How does the last pic relate to the garage layout? I can’t work it out. Is there a lift?
Glad it's not just me. Is that a before and after series of pics? Can't work any of it out to be honest! RichB said:

That looks a healthy size for a double. Some doubles I've seen have been VERY small compared to yours. Nice PH banner on the wall too! Garage at my first house, just a single with no space to move.

Off the top of my head I think its about 30m2 about 5.8m wide. The guy I bought it from had a fairly modern BMW 5 series in there so it can fit something pretty big if necessary. Not a contender for best garage by a long shot, but my best so far. Bought the house in 1998 with just a single driveway and open carport. Got planning approval to build out to the boundary with a parapet wall and bring the front of garage 6M towards the road (being at the end of a cul de sac probably helped that pass)
Garage was 6.5M wide and roughly 12M long, although the 6M width was to half length then tapered in following the boundary to 4.5M wide at the back. So essentially a 2 car garage with decent workshop space behind. (Plan at that time was to build a kit car)
First photo as we bought it (my daughter was 6 then! Getting married this year)
First thing we did was pour the front half of the slab as this didn't interfere with existing structure. Wish I'd taken more photos, I dug the pit by hand over a few weekends, then poured a floor slab and block walls, which I filled with reinforced concrete. Then welded up a decent U beam frame for the top which made a base for the lid and a recess for power and lights. Mistake no 1- pit wasn't long enough, difficult to get the car far enough over and still get down (or back up!) Should have been half as long again with stairs instead of using a ladder. Mistake No 2 - going for dark brown concrete... no idea why I chose that!
We then built the front walls (My Dad and I were doing most of the work but did employ a bricklayer) I was very lucky to find the last remaining (discontinued) batch of bricks to match the house!
Next we demolished the carport piers and stripped the roof. Don't seem to have any photos. Tapering parapet wall then built on boundary and roof timbers installed (I was out of my depth here but my Dad was a draftsman who had built several houses by himself)
The scruffy fence and gate were removed once the garage was completed
Me looking puzzled by the mysteries of roofing...
Dad with everything under control! This picture reminded me that we didn't pour the concrete floor of the back half until after the walls were up and the roof was on.
Managed to find second hand roof tiles to match the house:
Made a side door to match the house front doors
Garden re established with some poured limestone paths and blockwork, time to finish the driveway...
Don't seem to have photos after that. The concrete drive was poured to the road, intention was to top it with poured limestone to match the paths. Unfortunately I became very ill at that point, was out of work for a while, then our marriage fell apart. So my ex wife now has a lovely garage / workshop with pit etc. (She does allow me to use it when needed)

Yes, very nice that. What width is it, do you know?Tim the pool man said:
Looks great. Good work on finding matching bricks. Sorry to hear about the health and marriage.Profile says you're in Perth, what is the timber used for the roof? Obviously not the same as we would use here.
Noticed the Seven type in the background of one of the shots, good work.
Daniel
Can't actually remember the roof timber as my Dad would have sourced it for me. Most likely Jarrah I think. The "7" belonged to a friend who was the local sales agent for the Australian version of the Westfield. He built several, based his on Mitsubishi running gear (I think he has the 3 Diamond symbol tattooed on the inside of his eyelids!!) Won a couple of State sports car championships back in the 90s

Sounds fair enough. Thanks.Daniel
Mine is still a complete mess but now has an oven and fridge/freezer. We're having a new kitchen so I thought I'd make use of what was coming out
The pile of plasterboard is on top of a pit. I'm still not sure whether to fill it in or cover it over properly with some durbar flooring as the timber that covers it at the moment has seen better days.

Do you have any use for it? I have not had a pit, but would certainly leave it usable and see how it went, the best bit of any MOT for me is being able to stand under the car and freely look at the underside and the condition of various parts. To be able to do so in my own leisure would be a boon. The timbers might be a bit worn but I expect they are as strong as they ever where. Obviously if you wanted them smart you could replace like for like, or a section of flooring which was removable. What are you planning to do for the rest of the floor, leave it as it is, or cover it?

At the moment I have no use for it whatsoever. That may change in the future though as I intend on owning a car again, so long as I haven't spent all my money on doing this fing place up! It's got about 18" of water in there which must be something that's happened regularly over the years as there's a pump sitting in the bottom, hosed up and ready to go. Filling it in may cause that water to go elsewhere??What are you planning to do for the rest of the floor, leave it as it is, or cover it?

The floor will be painted.

Get a water heater and hey presto, you have a hot tub! The floor will be painted.
