Is that silver material insulation that you have fixed on?
Hi, Yes it is 25mm celotex that i cut to size and placed in the void between the plywood door fascia and the metal framing. Rest of the garage was also fully insulated with 50mm when i did the project in the summer.
Well, you can't hide the fact that the garage has doors but perhaps you could sheet over that with some lightweight panel board and paint it white and add a few posters?

Has the door insulation made a notable difference would you say?

Thanks.
Hi,

its hard to say how much the door insulation on its own has done, since ive insulated the full garage.

Overall insulation has made a huge difference over the winter, and made it a much nicer place to work. The garage is now dehumidified and is not using much energy to maintain it. The ambient temperature in the garage is about 5-7 deg higher than outside with much less variation. The dehumidifier helps by putting out warmer air than it takes in.

Did the springs in the lifting mechanism cope wit the extra weight or did you have to re-tension them?

Hi,

The springs did not need retensioning, and I just did a relearn process on the garage door opener which automatically then adjusts the forces required to open it.

I'm slowly making my garage a bit better in the hope it will be ready for when the car returns. Boarded the ceiling and insulated above, have four 600x300 LED panels in the ceiling too.

Question, it's a rendered breezeblock construction. It's dry in there. I want to add insulation to the walls. Can I get away with 35mm celotex between battens and board over or do I need a moisture barrier??

You need a vapour barrier on the warm side

Has anyone built a new (double/single) garage from scratch to comply with permitted development restrictions but be a little bit more architecturally interesting? Would love to see some examples of the exteriors!

Likewise any clever uses of space to make it useful storage but still fit 2 cars!

I want to avoid the standard brick square box (at least my wife does..), but wanna try and squeeze a decent double (likely 6x6.5) at my rear boundary - so 2.5m max height.

Making some great progress with the floor here. Last few weekends have had the floor sealed, levelled and the majority of tiles down yesterday.
Had been a little uncertain about how well it was going to go, but it's looking absolutely great so far. Grabbing some lunch and away to start measuring/ cutting the side tiles, but on track to get the floor finished I think by the end of next week.

Is that thermal underlay up the walls? Why?

I'm not too sure, it's silver bubble wrap looking stuff, but it was like that when I got here!
Walls are chipboard loft flooring panels as well which is a bit odd, but it's not too offensive with a lick of paint so they'll do the job for now anyway.

Made some good progress with it the last couple weeks, floor finished and definitely a good decision to go with the tiles.
Just the walls to tidy up but not too much work to go.

I'm joining the club

The house came with a crappy concrete sectional single garage with leaky roof... which has gone to make way for a decent sized single 4m x 6.75m

What are people's thoughts on up-and-over doors vs roller shutter?

Sectional doors are my preferance as they're so well insulated and sealed.

Yep, only go for roller-shutter if you want/ need to use the height internally. Sectional/ up and over get in the way, but as posted, sectional are much better insulators. Rollers have next to no insulating effect.

Not sure how much this matters in a detached garage!

Go for insulated roller shutter.

I think sectional look better because you can get windows across the top section. Roller shutters look a but industrial.

What about proper hinged doors?

Quite like the idea of hinged barn doors - I think they'd get annoying quite quickly in real life

I'm leaning towards roller shutter at the moment

Why? Put electric actuators on them, and they're no trouble.

Conclusion I came to. Going for up and overs on my garage (it's costing me enough as it is!!).
