I am quite at a loss as to how anybody who professes to write about cars for a living could proffer that opinion.

All I can surmise is that
a). You haven't driven very many cars
or
b). your point of view is horribly out of step with most informed opinion.

I don't think the answer is a).

I guess that sometimes it pays to realise when your opinion is a bit off on certain things.
is this aimed at me? if so, im fairly sure my opinion is legitimate, by virtue of the fact that I formed it for myself, based on my experience. thats pretty much how i form nearly all my opinions. Im also fairly sure that Im not obligated to keep my opinion 'in step' with that of others, else it wouldnt be my opinion. do you see? you think its a good car, but that doesnt mean I have to.

however, if Im going about this opinion forming thing all wrong, please do let me know. Im only too happy to keep you happy.
No, you're doing really well. Keep up the good work.

My friend purchased an rx8 230 bhp and he regreted it sincce, big MOt failure, stereo and centre console freezes everytime he shuts the door or someone sits in the passenger seat.
The interior creaks on every single imperfection in the road and the engine backfires with blue flames coming out the exhausts .

He also had to warm up the car every morning otherwise would run like a fiat cicento ( for a modern car that lests face it its not earth shattering fast seems a bit ott)

He had the courage to take it to a dealer and for the stereo they wanted 1200 quid but the suprise call of the day was a a word of advice from a friendly guy to get ridd of it as the engines are notorious of not reaching 70k miles.

He bought a type r and hes much happier, oh and he lost 2k+ bills in 3 months on the rx8

No wonder you can buy a 2007 192 model for under 9k

Interesting thread

I've been toying with getting an E46 M3 (had 350z hovering in the back of my mind, but this thread seems to have killed that, plus looking at the boot with that flipping strut brace thingy) and the current values just astound me

Trying to get a real feel for values seems almost impossible, with a lot of private sales its obvious they just arent in touch with the real value of their cars (or dont want to face up to the loss)

That said, the trade arent much better and the variation is insane

As an example I've seen two 2004 M3 convertibles, both SMG's and v high spec (sat nav/tv/bluetooth/elec lumbar, etc), good colours, FBMWSH and both around 50k miles

1) around £19.5k
2) around £16k

This is repeated across the 02 - 05 plate ranges, both in coupes/convertibles and manual/smg.

I appreciate its going to cost £440 to tax from next year, but £16k for an o4 with that mileage and spec just seems one heck of a lot of car for your money

Ignore the prats on here. The 350Z is a very good car and it's well worth going for a drive in one, but an E46 M3 is undoubtedly a better car. Look at the new prices and you're not really comparing eggs with eggs here.

That has got to be the worse relation to a car such as the Z ever. I owned one and although I was dissapointed with it, it certainly isnt as bad as you make it out to be.
I think the American version was quite different in the setup IRRC.

I've never driven one but I've had a go in an RX8 recently which I found disappointing (even not paying for petrol!). I really wanted it to be a good car frown.

Why so cheap!?...because its a piece of st that hardly anyone wants.Girls or limp wristed office workers car.
i just love some of the rubbish that gets written on here sometimes! i am not a woman, nor in any way limp wristed that i know of, yet i had a zed...

hmmmm, interesting. maybe im yet to unearth my true sexual preferences...
i dont think its anything about sexual preferences though in reality.

more about knowing anything about cars, I have driven two 350z's one a coupe, too heavy, not very fast, bit crap all round, the other a cab, id rather stick needles in my eyes than pretend to people its actually quite a good car.

simple really

Peculier spec import cars are cheap. Good low mileage UK spec cars are great value for the performance.

They weren't THAT expensive new compared to a similar performing coupe.

Depreciation has brought them into our grasps.

I'd like one, but sometimes the rear 3/4 styling looks a little odd, that silly brace makes the boot useless and the interior is a little low rent .... REALITY CHECK! ..... Tunable rear drive performance for £10k!!! Where do I sign!

I take the point about the "eggs and eggs" re the new values of 350/M3, but when your buying second hand that just doesnt come in to it

I will get a test drive of the 350 just to know for sure, but the E46 M3 is looking VG at the mo, just cant seem to beat the combination of performance/practicality and reliability (not to mention toys, which arent top of the list but if you can have the lot, why not?).

From previous experience with the E36 I think it very unlikely I'd continue any FBMSH it had though, found the BM dealers (in my humble opinion I hasten to add) to be a bunch of ignorant, rude (unless of course you drive an 08 plate 5/6/7 series with all the options, bought from them) and downright crap bunch of whatsits, much better off with an indy specialist.

You can actually fit a surprising amount of stuff into the Zed's boot - it just needs to be squashable bags rather than cases. There's a big cubby behind the passenger seat too (so called glovebox) and a few other places around the cabin to store bits and pieces.

I ran mine as my one and only car and as a daily driver. It was utterly reliable, but like I said the build quality was shocking. It was thirsty, heavy, not that fast, noisy (particularly on the feathering prone Bridgestones) and the seats were horribly uncomfortable. But then again, for 8k good value I guess.

I always liked the 350. Is it really that slow? and what about MPG? I heard horror stories of single digit figures

mine used to average about 22.
It wasn't great but had something to do with the fact it was mainly town driving and it sounds so good at 3500-4000rpm wink

0-62 in circa 6 secs is hardly slow either
This is what puzzles me. A current 350Z gets to 60mph in 5.8s and tops out at 154mph. It's a quick car. I won't deny that it's a bit heavy and that some of the interior plastics aren't top drawer. Here is a well-balanced rear wheel drive coupe, with a torquey 309bhp V6 and a beautifully throttle-adjustable chassis. Go for one of the earlier models and it has real muscle car heft to the steering.

I'm intrigued to know what these 'proper' cars are that we should be driving instead.

Gutted for him; I enjoyed owning my Type-R, but the '8 is a far better driver's car.
