My favourite car of all time! I love the way they look, I love the way they drive, I pretty much love everything about these cars.

Here is a pic of mine [which is currently for sale by the way - I've stepped up to an Integra Type-R now]...it's only got 77k miles on the clock! http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/688440.htm

Jesus eek

That's a helluva lot of money.

Is the mkII GTI market still that buoyant?

Fair enough. The 8v is a great lump though. Bombprooof, the heads last longer than the 16v whose valve guides wear quicker and you don’t have to rag the nuts of it to make any meaningful progress
My mechanic alway said it was the other way round - e.g. 8v although good are not quite as tough as the 16v? - I've driven both and I really would happily have either - Why don't modern 4 pots sound so throaty anymore???

I say used for some crimes in the past few weeks, bilking petrol stations, parking in disabled bays, that kind of thing wink

That's what I was thinking before I was distracted while writing my earlier post. I'd put money on it being on the ANPR system as 'linked to crimes'. I reckon it'll have a load of bus lane/red route/C charge fines outstanding too.

£250? There has to be something wrong here. We should have a sweepstake; I call 'accident damaged and bodged back together'.
I call'having it sitting on his dads driveway, untaxed and uninsured, having bought a MKIV, so not wanting to bother with MOT, tax and insurance sells at a loss'

Can't you read!, they have less torque than the 16v at every point of the rev range...

People will always want a classic like the Mk2 big bumper 16v GTi ASBO and the VW scene is a big as ever. My valver is so so rare now-a-days, being totally standard and having covered just 77k miles. I know of an oak green car selling for £5k last year!

At the end of the day, the kind of person who wants a 16v Mk2 [like me] wants a 16v Mk2 and nothing else...that don't come cheap and I paid good money for my Golf 2 years ago, and it'll be worth the same in another 2 years.

True, Golf's hold there value much better than the equivalent Peugeot, Renault, Honda etc. I can't compare the 8 to the 16 but most people say the 8 is the better car. So many 16's I've seen smoke like a bon fire and from what I hear they have all had a thrashing! I would probably buy an 8v with big bumpers but I have a Corrado VR6 for running about in! :-)

My Mk2 8v has done 179k, and still on the original unopened engine, gearbox and........... wait for it...............clutch!!!! The secret I think is lots of hard driving but with heal and toe. It saves the clutch and box.

A small amount of smoke on start up from the valve guides wearing a bit, but it's been doing it for years and it passes annual emissions every time so leaving alone.

It's a 92 run out model spec. Probably lasted so long as it's not a 16v. They've largely all been thrashed to get the power out of them. If you notice most run out model Mk2's available now are 8valvers. The 16's are rare probaby as crashed and thrashed in the past.

Also most 16v's have been horribly modded by the halfords brigade.

I think this one should clean up ok and if put straight be worth £1k to 1.2k.

Good luck with it.

V8 Merc in the middle of a fuel crisis I hear you say. I now know that the time is right to buy something with 55 AMG written on the back.

Thanks for the heads up!

you should restore it to its small bumper roots.

its also a pre-90 car, which is a shame.

you can tell its not a 'big bumper' by the fact it has no mouldings on the sills... smile

At last a bit of common sense!...clap

The story about how the car was aquired sounded right dodgy though...wobble,..I'm glad you checked it out beforehand.

If everything is alright with the car, that's a cracking price for such a little gem of a car!...thumbup

Good buy if it works! I've seen these still going for silly money. Would make a wicked track car!
True, but they are genuine big bumper cars with PAS, original, low owner count, decent histories etc. I would value this car at £800 - £1000 personally.

Nice car, nice deal. I can't beleive how many namby pamby, wuss posts about your buying experience. Buying bangers is fun and escapades like this are what it's all about, and if it is a wrong un you could get your money back by scrapping it.Let's put this into perspective, two tanks of diesel in a boring people carrier or a hot hatch hero? I know what I'd rather have spent my cash on this week.

Anyone who says the 8V is faster / more useable is either an idiot or has never driven a 'valver. I had 2 8V golfs and then 2 16V Jettas and I can say with no bias that the 16V engine is more drivable, smoother, more torquey, more willing to rev and way more powerful. The 8V does sound better though.

I'm gonna throw this out there though... The 16V jetta is better than the 16V golf, cheaper to insure, stiffer chassis, more aerodynamic and more practical.

one last thing, my 16V standard Jetta was the only car I've ever owned that could hit the limiter (7500rpm) in top gear, speedo said 148mph my calcualtions said 135mph... on the M5 at 2am pretty impressive and also very scary.

Cut most of the springs off, remove all of the badges, stretch some 135 rubber over the tyres and stick it up on the owner's club website for £7k.

Didn't the Jetta 16v also have a different gearbox (lower ratios?) from the golf 16v that made it a bit quicker to 60 MPH?

great buy for 250... it would have come with small bumpers from factory as it must be a 89 G as the side mouldings are early type, but still looks ok.
Do some sensible things to it like good clean and polish inside and out, maybe an oil change and check over, soon be worth 3 to 4 times what you paid.

SOTW might want to watch fifth gear this monday as they supposed to have a feature on the mk2 16v...

i got my old 1992 16v out of retirement 2 months ago, it was laid up for 4 years and all i did was change battery, oil and timing belt to be on safe side, got a new mot and tax and been driving it every day 50 miles to work and back since and its good as gold. Still pulls hard with 180k miles on original lump as had 6.5k RPM in 5th other day no worries
