LA - excellent points made; especially in your last paragraph. Good to see you posting on this car. Miguel
Hi Miguel. Not much time these day to get caught up in PH topics. Am setting up my own journo blog, a follow-on from columns demande by newspaper proprieters. Should be interesting getting insulted in hundreds of different ways by the near-certified and the homocidal. wink

Forgot to mention: An MX5's horn note is puny. The Porche Boxster's fits perfectly and alters the quality! smile
I remember having read that on PH but had completely forgotten that it was your advice. The first time I drove an MX5, I figured out why so many fit airhorns. The stock horn is as puny as the car, so people either don't see you or ignore you. I still have the standard horn on mine but may try the Boxster update.

LA, good to see you posting here again, mate.

What would you recommend to someone that wants an MX-5 but needs 4 seats? Is there a car that's as good that can carry more people?

RX-7 or RX-8, the same 'fun' (light and RWD, thus great handling) but with extra oomph, added seats and rotary goodness!

I had a Mk3 2.0 Sport, important to get the lowered suspension kit fitted (factory option, costs like a tenner and isn't standard due to some predestrian safety rating - somewhere).

It was fantastic although a little hairy for what seemed like no reason at times. . . wink

Me too - yesterday evening, lovely sunshine for once and quite warm, cruising on the A1 with the top down and I'm passed by about 6 MX5s with the roofs up. They were all mk2s or 3s - the only one I saw with the roof down was a mk1. This seems to always be the case, most mk1s have the roof down, 2s and 3s are always buttoned-up.
Nearly me too. Picking up my Mk1 1.8 tomorrow.bounce
That'd be me too then cloud9 even if the wheel bearings need replacing and the engine needs a good tune. tongue out
Me too cloud9 Even if mine is in repairs at the moment. They're even a joy to work on!

Don't know about anybody else but I didn't buy an MX-5 to be looked at! I bought it because it is a very competent sportscar with excellent handling for very little money. smile
Good for you. smile

That's why I bought mine too.
Hmm, strange how most wedges I see, although I do like 80's wedges, do look like kit car parts bin specials.

Also, wasn't the handling of your car known to be a bit on the 'Widowmaker' side?

Graham, I think you'll find most MX5 owners are so involved in the soul and feel of their cars (mine's a Mk1, can't comment on 2 & 3's but sounds like many feel the same) not to worry about what others think. If you need to pose then I suppose a poorly silenced V8 is a good way to do it.

I'll put the analogy another way, gokarting, the cheap version for us mere mortals with the Honda package engines, it's a bit like that. In a 5 you have to make use of what you've got. And that is a fun and enjoyable challenge.

One thing that always surprises me is that more rivals weren't made. Every maker is jumping on the small mpv/fake 4x4/4 door coupe bandwagon but no one bar MG ever made a direct rival (the MR2 predated the MX)

The point is, a lot of people couldn't care less whether they are being "looked at" - to those people, your issue is of no concern! Without getting into tit for tat, I have personally always had a real problem with the looks of the Wedges! wink

laughbiggrin

Regarding their looks - I'd still own one even if it looked like a Fiat Multipla, because they're such good fun to drive. The fact that they (well, the mk1s anyway biggrinwink ) look fantastic, like little iconic sportcars, is a bonus, and a great one, they're instantly recognisable. As is the roofdown-ness cool

So what.

Most Wedgers have minds of their own and definitely couldn't give a toss about what anyone else thinks of their choice of vehicle or anything else for that matter.

As far as I'm concerned the MX5 is a computer designed mass-produced, common as muck machine, mainly driven by hairdresser types or women.

I you don't like that...TOUGH.

Yeah man, seriously. I think you've proven how unbelievably hetrosexual you are already, what with driving a manly TVR and picking on the poor, obviously effeminate MX5 owner. I think we all now know that you are absolutely not gay in any way shape or form. No need to harp on about it ok. Straight as an arrow. Yes siree.

Maybe you'll get a wave when I blast past your little Jap robot-produced clonemobiles.

Go and have a group hug or something...bloody cry babies. Bye all. biggrin

Graham - maybe other people have had a hard day's work too and don't need your sort of comment.

I think we have discovered though that you may pass the Mazda whilst travelling backwards. Just prior to your disappearance from the tarmac'd surface via a hedge.

I'd say too, I suspect a number of those who tune their 5's for power and speed may well have little trouble in passing your TVR...

(Before you ask, mines stock and may or may not be knocking out all 116 bhp it was blessed with at birth, so it's not me)

Obviously you don't 'get' why people own MX5's (I didn't once either, then my mum had to go and get one), so perhaps if you wouldn't rather try and think about what other people want in a car, it may be best if you spend time on other, non-MX5 owner'd forums.

Cool and I'll wave back at you in your dated plastic kit car that was assembled (badly) in some shed in Blackpool :P

I spent more money on a less efficient car than discovered that the MX-5 really is as good as everyone says. Damn. I need to justify my purchse. I know! idea Pistonheads! I'll go on there and see if there's any MX-5 owners I can use to make myself feel less like a plonker for spending all this money on a pup.

Oh, damn, argument's getting tough. I know! idea I'll throw in the old 'hairdresser' card. It's not a true reflection of owners (even less so on PH) but it'll do as I don't have the intelligence to come up with something more original.

Oof. Argument's getting really tough. Turns out the MX-5 really is better than mine. I know! idea Flick them the old 'gay' card then leggit. I'll actually check back on this thread but won't post so it'll look like I'm not bothered about being thrashed.

Time for a drink. Elderflower presse, I think.
