Me and 5 mates slept in my MK1 fiesta after a party, I managed to squeeze down into the driver footwell and put my head on the seat, 3 in the back and 1 in the boot!!

The current shape Vectra Estate is vast and totally flat.

Always thought about doing this but would need tinted rear windows, the cold comments - well it will be warmer than a tent. As for leaving the window open... why? The air vents unless you have it on recirculate are open to external.

Its quite annoying having to pitch up a tent then pull it down afterwards. Also if you arrive late doing it in the dark isnt fun. Also if your in a fullish park you can hear people farting at night in the tents.

yes The funeral director I used to work for uses them for long distance body collections, they can cruise at motorway speeds without people panicing like they do when they see a high speed hearse.

Audi A4 Avant will sleep a 5"5" person fully sprawled out, an A6 Avant will sleep a 6 footer easily.

They also have quite a high floor up away from the metalwork to keep it fairly warm.

Largest "bed space" I've ever had was an old Rover 800 fastback. Mark 2 Cavalier was reasonably comfy but not quite so spacious.

Plenty of room in the V70 but I've not yet needed to try and sleep in it.

Bags of room in a classic Saab 900 - front seats aren't bad to sleep in either. Back seat down in a Volvo V90 is pretty much the same as taking all the seats out of a Grand Espace...

Your name makes me inclined to believe an A6 nAvant is the ideal car for the job!

The big question is where do you put all your stuff if you sleep in the back of an estate? Outside or possibly on the front seats I suppose. Alternatively buy a Defender 110 and put a mattress in the back above the wheel wells, and put storage boxed under the mattress to support it.

Did a John o'Groats to Lands End cycle ride with the wife and 6 month old baby supporting me from the Landy, at night we slept in it and saved a fortune in hotel bills. Sadly my knee gave up the fight on the Isle of Arran, so we never made it.

Any of the old square-ass Volvos... 900, 700, 200, 140, 120 series even... double mattress in the back no problem.

The only downside I can see is that some campsites are run by wrs who act the arse if you don't have either a tent or a caravan. Only troublemakers sleep in cars, you're not a decent camper if you don't have a separate thing to sleep in. Stuck-up tts. OTOH not having a tent or caravan makes it less likely that you'll need to use an actual campsite.

The Fiat Doblo comes with decent diesel engines and bags of space. Cheap too.

Legacy wagon seats fold flat and space to stretch out, have moved a (single) bed in one before. Though I did have to take the headboard off.

Mine's probably long enough for me (short) but it's not cavernous. Useful if caught in a tight spot, like all those people who slept in their cars on the M5 during the floods last year.

Slept the night in cars on two occasions ... both Mk1 Golfs. First time was in the back seat of a 4-door one, second time was the front seat of a 2-door one.

Both times I slept incredibly badly, and wouldn't EVER recommend it. And I'm only 5ft8, so far from huge.

Avoid. At all costs.

I've never been in one of these that doesn't perminantly smell of farts.
