A 'supercar' has to have the 'WOW' factor. Sadly, certainly IMO, the 997 Turbo does not.
It's not the sort of car you drop a gear to catch on a motorway to get a closer look, it's not the sort of car that has kids whipping out their camera phones at the sight of one parked up, it may be a car that I would love to own, and it may be a lot more practical than its 'competitors' but it doesnt have the WOW factor. Why? Simple. It looks too much like the rest of the range, normal people probably dont take much more of an interest in it than they do a Boxster. If it's parked up, they walk past, maybe admiring it as its quite a nice car.
Lambo Murci parked up... people stop and stare, people say 'WOW, look at that' - people mention it to their kids that they saw a Lambo today, they take pictures of them. You dont see them very often. The Porsche is far too common, its a shame. As a one off car, it may IMO have the supercar label.
Yes, its a capable car, but i dont think its a supercar.
Beg to differ my old girl gets as much if not more attention than the more modern exotica even at somewhere like le mans (IMO age makes a big difference with a porsche)I lost count of the admirers this year plenty of people were having their picture taken next to it!It's not the sort of car you drop a gear to catch on a motorway to get a closer look, it's not the sort of car that has kids whipping out their camera phones at the sight of one parked up, it may be a car that I would love to own, and it may be a lot more practical than its 'competitors' but it doesnt have the WOW factor. I do like the newest porsches but personal opinion/childhood impressions always drive my desires to the older rarer models. Also I only really like the aircooled models.
And the values hold firm even in these troubled times!
I too would come and take a look at yours, take a picture of it and generally admire the @rse off it - walking past any number of 997's to do so

RE 997 Ignoring entry models,if you take GT3 GT2 RS and the like Ive been fortunate to drive a few of these on the track and in my buisiness ,they truly are special awesome cars and I would perhaps consider a GT2 as my next porsche (cant belive I said that),perhaps even a RUF. These are super quick cars bear in mind a production GT2 was the fastest production porsche ever round the ring until the new GT!
A 997 turbo is a great car and still an icon to many people hence inmo a true supercar.

Beautiful 993, Gary. Is it a Turbo S, btw?
Thank you it is a good car,not an S ,but is 430bhp with Aero,am not a lover of all the extra trim in the S, if Im honest its heavy enough, they were available with the vented rear wings and a power upgrade in the UK,not quite as nimble on the track as a narrow body car but makes up for it in performance it really is even in todays terms a quick car ! plenty said:
Yawn. They've been writing this same story since the 1970s - first the 3.0/3.3 Turbo vs Countach and Boxer/Testarossa, then the 993 vs Diablo/512TR, and so on.
Agreed. Same old stuff. Surely there's a better angle for a story with a 911 Turbo? Why are you bothering with a 2 year old model when there's a nice new GT2, surely this would have made (slightly) more interesting reading?Jon

It aint supercar, it's just a goodcar.
I would disagree, performance figures like that put it squarely in supercar territory.GT2 is quicker than GT!

CGT manages 0-100 in 7.4sec and 0-150 in 16.5.

Sorry if I'm repeating a comment already posted, I've only scanned the thread. BUT my 2pp for whats its worth....
.... if we all take time out for a second and think back to the era when the "supercar" really hit a peak, for those of us who were youngsters with bedrooms to poster ask yourself what were the cars that stood out in your memory.....?
Aston Martin Vantage in green or black
Countach in white
Testarossa or 512BB in red
911 Turbo or 959 in white or silver
Lotus Esprit Turbo in blue
Athena(or its equivalent then) had them all.
These were the supercars of that particular era. They shocked with there performance, they dropped jaws with their looks and they were the preserve of the few, with price tags to match their performance.
If you are taking into account the legend then YES the 911 is to my mind a "supercar" it helped write the "rule book" just maybe not so special in the current era of "Hypercars"
