Wait, what? The 218i has a 3cyl 1.5?

I have even less respect for them than I did already

I completely get the aspirational psychology of being too young or still saving for the “real deal” machine and badging up your TDI / 218i as something more potent.

After all this is what capitalism and the motor industry are hoping - to convert you from a 116d to an M4…….even if it takes 20 years, 7 PCP deals and an ever increasing repayment of debt……

Why would you be surprised? Engine sizes are getting smaller all the time.

Was in Thailand a few weeks ago and spotted this... I guess the owner was in two minds between a BMW and an AMG...

Is that…. an Alfa badge too?
Zooming in I think it's actually a Mercedes badge rofl

Stuff like this fascinates me. That car's 8 months old at the time of writing. Who collects their new car and wastes no time in slapping more badges on it? I never normally assume the first owner of a car like this is responsible for modifications done to it. Are the badges a kill counter of models the driver's 'done' off the lights in the Traffic Light GP?

Finally, the most pertinent question of all: Why?

Surprised because they called it a 218i and not a 215i, almost like they are trying to convey it has a bigger engine than it does.

Haha I wouldn't worry, in another topic BenS discusses his love of Rover 75s and describes himself as looking like Fat bd from Austin Powers....

I'm also in agreement that a Z4M is far more of an M car than a m140/340i and lightyears ahead of any M-Sport. I also find it utterly tragic when I hear people say things like " My M Sport" when it's a 320d.
I’m not overly fussed, I know what it is!

Saw a ///M 335d (really a 320d) on the ///M5 earlier

What like when the 318d had a 1.7L engine in 1994?

Or when they put a 4.8L engine in the 550i in 2005?

It's nothing new.

Or the 525e and 528e in the E28 5-Series. Both used a 2.7L engine.

The 545i was a 4.4, as was the earlier 540i

Then there were the 330d and 530d's that were actually a 2.9.

And the 316i that was a 1.8, and the 318i that was a 2.0, and the 320i/520i's that were actually a 2.2 and the 523i that was a 2.5.

What about all those 18d's that are a 2.0 or those 25/35/40d's and i's that are all a 3.0?

Oh, I forgot about the 1.9 316i, I'll stop now..... biggrin

Badging aside, that looks ancient for a new car. If it was wearing a 54 reg I wouldn't think twice.

You can't see the reg but no prizes for guessing which engine it has.

Don't think that's misbadged. Looks correctly labelled as a turd to me.
