If I recall, the power didn't go over 195 bhp - they were aiming at the fastest Citroen XM (204 / 205bhp?) in the BHP power stakes but never quite made it. Also I think it didn't work well in excessive cold, so rather than fixing the issue they just never bothered to sell it in the Nordic countries.

It's also possible that you couldn't change the CD in the new fangled CD player in 3rd gear, but my memory is fading after years of abuse now... smile

Something magical about the dear old grannie...

My old 24v Grannie did 249,00 before the auto box cried enough. Uneconomic to repair, so it got broken up for a kit car by some loony

The engines half an Aston Martins. If I recall correctly this is what the aston (cosworth supplied) V12 is based on.

Oh, come now. Don't get excited about the Cosworth version. There was one version that eclipsed even that. That surely must be the carbed 1.8L, complete without power-sapping PAS and with poverty-spec seats and lots of blanking plates on the dash.

Have you got any details for the crumble rally, i assume it is similar to the Mongol Rally, which i considered after some mates of mine did it, but i haven't got the time to do it!

the problem possibly being, that once you've stuck that engine in something else, it'll no longer be very light...

Do you have any details on the Crumble Rally? Is it permitted to buy the car from auction thus getting a better deal?

I was supposed to go on the Bermondsey 500 this year but my partner pulled out...

It's the Crumball;

Did it last year. Good fun but you don't get a lot for your £150. I think we're just going to gather a group of like minded mates this year.

Ok... time to dispel some myths.

The original 2.9 ford block made 148 bhp.... in the granada cosworth this went up to 195. In the more modern tweaked Scorpio (94 - 98) it made 206 bhp.

My dad still drives a 98 Scorp as his DD - 162,000 miles and counting. What with the recession, he's finally thinking about replacing it while things are cheap... probably in the next couple of months.

I'm prodding him towards an S8 or AMG... wink

I used to have one of these about 6 years ago, was a great piece of kit, handled alot better when the suspension had been dropped and stiffened. Finally got rid and got a Yellow 850 T5R instead, yes I did like subtle q-cars wink

These engines found their way into many a Sierra XR4x4 as well..

Good guys, and the rev counter would raise quickly above 3400rpm!

We drove it back via Monaco (we were on the rally to Venice). Ours wasn't what you'd call a 'standard' banger rally car though; I managed to find a Mercedes 500 SEL on ebay for £250, which was close enough to budget not to be judged as cheating. It was considerably better than most of the other cars...
That being said, most people made it there and quite a few drove back. It's the crossing of the alps that's the killer.
